So...I was WAY off the mark with my Illumina predications. Completely misinterpreting the headline, yesterday's big reveal showed off the MiSeq i100 as the latest addition to their portfolio. This progression into a more manageable but equally powerful device had me thinking of the evolution of mobile phones. History seems to repeat itself, so we could see devices as manageable as a handheld sequencer before expanding back up to behemoths requiring two full bench spaces. Hopefully this won't end up being another device we can't imagine living without, though it seems unlikely unless Illumina decide to launch their own scientific social media.
