Raman spectroscopy is a good technique for chemical and physical characterisation of materials, but it has some limitations, like a lack of sensitivity or its micron-scale resolution. Since the 1970s, the coupling of the plasmonic effect with Raman has been increasingly used to overcome these limits. This phenomena association results in two enhanced Raman spectroscopies called SERS and TERS, respectively associated to Surface and Tip origins. Thibault will discuss how the coupling of Plasmonic and Raman effects results to SERS and TERS and will detail some applications. A remarkable unearthing that gives unprecedented experimental perspectives on the nature of C C bonds! Shimijari and Ishigaki show direct evidence of C--.--C one electron bond which could be observed since the two carbons are stretched out in space in fused C-rings, effectively making them lose one electron! Three cheers for excitons:   Unpaired electron spins in molecules are promising for #quantum information science. The spins can be precisely controlled and arranged into multilevel quantum states, enabling greater information processing. But they have their challenges: Individual spins are difficult to manipulate, and their coherence time is short.   In research published by the American Chemical Society and supported by Q-NEXT, scientists at Northwestern University have found that using special crystals as a host for these electron spins produces well defined signals, allowing greater control over the spin states. Specifically, they used crystals made of pyrene and naphthalene dianhydride to host triplet excitons — electron-hole pairs with three spin states.    https://lnkd.in/gs4hWAm2   In addition, they found that at the right temperature — 20 Kelvin — the coherence time for these triplet excitons was 7.1 microseconds.   Their findings provide valuable insights into designing materials with improved quantum properties, which could have significant implications for quantum information science.   https://lnkd.in/gs4hWAm2   #quantumscience #quantuminformation #qubit #MidwestQuantum #QuantumPrairie #quantummaterials

You can hear and see Professor Bjørn Eske Sørensen talk about Raman in our monthly seminar at IGP today at 11 (Norway time) - link to Zoom conference in the comments field below 👇 Raman is a supplement to other techniques like SEM eds that uses the chemical composition to identify minerals and ignores the crystal structure. Compared to EBSD (sem technique) Raman uses the bond response whereas EBSD only works for materials that have a lattice, but Raman only works for material that are Raman active like most minerals and not metals. Raman has further advantages in that it is confocal. Since Raman uses a laser one can focus inside transparent material and study tiny inclusions, down to 0,25 micrometers, including solids and fluids. Eske Bjørn Stefanie Lode

Molten salts—ensembles of ions rapidly exchanging with each other at extremely high temperatures—can exhibit amazing fundamental chemistry such SN2 reactions leading to formation or dissociation of chemical species. Molten AlCl3 and its mixture with KCl are such salts. Our Chemical Science paper provides a comprehensive picture of speciation in- and away-from-equilibrium in these systems—a nice cocktail of a Marcus-like rate theory, ab initio simulations, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray scattering provides fundamental insight! https://lnkd.in/e4Wb4fvb
