It’s about empowering coastal communities and governments by giving them the knowledge and skills needed to manage their waters and protect marine resources efficiently. 👨🏫 Training for Lasting Impact The true strength of capacity building lies in long-term training. This means equipping local coast guards, law enforcement, and institutions with skills like navigation, law enforcement at sea, and surveillance, ensuring they can independently protect their waters even after external support has ended. ⚓ Sustainable Solutions Maritime security is about more than stopping illegal activities—it’s about building strong, sustainable systems. It was an eye-opening opportunity to dive deep into the evolving dynamics of ship management, from operational efficiency and legal frameworks to the increasing focus on environmental compliance. 📄One of the standout topics was the emphasis on SHIPMAN contracts—the essential legal agreements that define the roles and responsibilities between ship managers and owners. These contracts are critical for ensuring smooth operations, mitigating risks, and maintaining compliance with international standards. 🌱On the environmental front, the course highlighted the industry's commitment to decarbonization through the adoption of cleaner fuels like LNG and methanol. These efforts, driven by international regulations, are reshaping the future of sustainability in shipping. ♦️Key outcomes from the 2nd CGIMA Meeting♦️ I had the honor of attending the 2nd CGIMA meeting, where we discussed some major maritime security issues. Here’s a quick summary of some of the key topics by some countries. 🇸🇨 Seychelles: ✔️ New CGIMA Chair: After Kenya’s successful leadership, Seychelles was unanimously appointed as the new chair. They’re committed to continuing efforts to improve maritime security and regional cooperation. 🇮🇳 India: ✔️ Commitment to Security: India emphasized five key areas: Info Sharing, Capacity Enhancements, Capacity Building and Public Messaging. They stressed the need for teamwork to tackle threats like piracy, smuggling, and human trafficking. ✔️ Actionable Intelligence: India’s Information Fusion Centre (IFC-IOR) is expanding, aiming to speed up responses to maritime threats by turning data into real-time action. ✔️ Better Coordination: India suggested CGIMA should focus on high-level strategy, working alongside DCOC to avoid duplication and respond quickly to threats. ✔️ Narcotics Trafficking: India raised concerns about narcotics smuggling from the Golden Crescent and its links to other crimes. They suggested cutting ties with states involved in this activity. ✔️ Vessel Reporting: India encouraged ships in the region to report to IFC-IOR for better protection and support at sea.
