RIBA London 🏆 Modulus Matrix: 85 Social Housing in Cornellà, Barcelona by Peris + Toral Arquitectes is the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2024, our bi-annual prize for the world’s best new architecture. “Peris + Toral Arquitectes’ inspiring housing project in Spain embodies the kind of transformational spirit that is both aspirational and demonstrates genuine change. By embracing flexibility and longevity through long life, loose fit architecture, it is a radical approach to social housing that creates a place designed for people to adapt and inhabit in the long term. This visionary scheme allows for new and future ideas of what constitutes a family, and should be seen as blueprint for delivering sustainable, quality housing around the world at scale. It is a strong example of the ways in which architects can create new and implementable solutions to the common challenge of creating housing for all.” - @muyiwa.oki, RIBA President

A world Architecture Day perspective. Dear UIA - International Union of Architects Council, As an architecture student, I appreciate the UIA's efforts to celebrate young architects and provide opportunities such as the upcoming UIA Young Architects Competition. However, while the theme of empowering the next generation is inspiring, I feel compelled to voice my concern regarding the broken architectural systems that many young architects face today. Despite the rhetoric of inclusion and participation, the harsh reality for many young professionals is a financial struggle that forces them to divert from their passion for architecture. The systems in place often do not offer the economic stability, mentorship, or opportunities needed to thrive. The profession has increasingly become inaccessible due to exploitative practices, inadequate pay, and a lack of proper support networks. These systemic issues have left many young architects disillusioned and financially unstable, leading them to abandon the field or pursue alternative careers where they feel more valued. The call to action for young architects to participate in urban design and contribute to sustainable development is ambitious, but how can we fully engage when the foundation we stand on is fragile? The profession needs reform beyond competition announcements and symbolic celebrations. We need to address issues such as fair wages, healthy work environments, and meaningful mentorship, ensuring that young architects are not only empowered to create but are also able to thrive financially and personally in this field. While I applaud the UIA’s commitment to showcasing young architects' ideas, let us also ensure that these same architects have the support necessary to build resilient careers within the profession. We must fix the broken systems that are holding us back. Respectfully submitted. To all the young architects out there: Your creativity and passion are essential in shaping the future, but never forget to advocate for your worth. While we are called to build sustainable cities, let us also build a sustainable profession for ourselves one that values our work, time, and potential. Stand strong, push for reform, and together we can reshape not only the urban landscapes but also the architecture systems that support our careers. #architecture #youngarchitects #worldarchitectureday #sustainableprofessions #youngprofessionals

🌍✨ Craft, Community & Sustainability in Architecture ✨🌍 We’re excited to share an inspiring interview with Prof. Dr. Jana Revedin and iyas shahin and Prof. Dr. Wesam Al Asali from IWLab, the 2024 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture laureates. This conversation explores how local craftsmanship and ancient techniques are redefining sustainable building. Starting from an encounter with a Moroccan artisan, IWlab founders realized the power of crafts as tools for resilient, sustainable living—not just beautiful objects. Their work highlights how traditional practices, like conserving energy by following the sun’s path, can guide modern architecture in harmony with the environment. 🎥 Watch the full interview to see how architecture can empower communities and foster resilience: https://lnkd.in/eBbkSKDz #SustainableArchitecture #CraftCulture #IWLab #JanaRevedin #BuildingResilience

On that rainy bank holiday Monday past - instead of getting out and enjoying the city, I stayed in and crunched some data on the AJ Small Projects Awards. Don't feel bad for me - I enjoy doing this kind of thing! Having pitched often for this award with various clients, it is useful to know some stats about the spread of projects that are selected - as there is about a 1/10 chance of hitting the shortlist. Half the battle with award submissions is having a good feeling whether you are likely to be shortlisted and knowing the odds. One thing that came up here - and I suspect it may be the case for all architectural award schemes across the country - is just how few studios in the North of England and the Midlands are submitting entries and getting shortlisted. Why are smaller projects outside of London, Southern England, and Scotland not finding an audience through award shortlists and press articles? This is actually an open question to Architects’ Journal and other awards organisers. Frances Williams - any thoughts? How can we make it better? #architecture #awards
The AJ Small Projects Awards is one of our favourites in the architectural calendar. It does a great job at shining a light on up and coming studios. We visited the awards event at Hawkins\Brown's London studio last week, and spoke to the winners, organisers at Architects’ Journal, and Marley - who have sponsored the awards for over ten year. Congratulations to Takeshi Hayatsu - who picked up the overall prize for his studio's innovative extension to a Lake District pub, to the runner up Artefact, Sustainability prize winner Topo Architects and People's Prize champion Commonbond Architects. And of course, we couldn't resist taking a closer look at the statistics. Who has been shortlisted the most times, what is the project typology and regional spread of shortlisted projects? Read the article to find out more. https://bit.ly/3UQwI9D #architecture #ajsmallprojectsawards #awards

🏆 Modulus Matrix: 85 Social Housing in Cornellà, Barcelona by Peris + Toral Arquitectes is the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2024, our bi-annual prize for the world's best new architecture. An innovative housing project that aims to redefine residential design and construction, this year's winning project achieves low CO₂ emissions and the combination of low-impact and time-efficient construction allows for the roll-out of similar projects where housing need is greatest. "Peris + Toral Arquitectes’ inspiring housing project in Spain embodies the kind of transformational spirit that is both aspirational and demonstrates genuine change. By embracing flexibility and longevity through long life, loose fit architecture, it is a radical approach to social housing that creates a place designed for people to adapt and inhabit in the long term. We’re delighted to share that Morris+Company’s CEO and Head of Architecture, Joe Morris, will be speaking at the SHARE Serbia 2024 International Architecture Forum, 26th November, in Belgrade! Joe’s talk, “Urban Continuity: Crafting a Modern Legacy at 15 Norton Folgate, London,” delves into the rich story of this transformative project—a celebration of historical and sensitive reuse. 15 Norton Folgate embodies the philosophy of building with thought, weaving new life into a historic fabric. By balancing heritage conservation with innovative design, this project illustrates how architecture can respectfully adapt and reimagine spaces for contemporary use, creating places that honour the past while meeting the needs of the present. This conversation resonates deeply with @Morris+Company’s vision and values that architecture should be a dialogue between people, place and planet. If you’re attending the conference, we’d love to hear your thoughts—drop us a message or come say hello after the talk! We would be pleased to connect, exchange ideas, and continue shaping places that inspire and endure. #MorrisandCompany #ShareSerbia #Architecture #15NortonFolgate #UrbanContinuity #ArchitecturalLegacy #Retrofit #AdaptiveReuse
