I'm on Day 24 of a 100 Day Project. I draw three of 100 cards I have in a box, pick one, and write. The cards have words or concepts that have some bearing on making art. Inevitably, I end up writing about life. Today's word was AGENCY. As I sat and wrote whatever came to mind I reached a point where I asked What is agency is like in a photography practice? For me (the photographer) it looks like responsiveness to current conditions, decisions about where I stand or sit and how I set the dials on my camera. How I develop the image in the end. For my subjects, it's a sense of quiet power: they place themselves in the setting - in the frame - the way they want to be seen. This sense of agency grows during every photoshoot, resulting in images like this one. Experimentation. Invitation. Directness. Connection. From this morning's stream of consciousness: "Agency is a warmth in the body, a brightness in the eyes. It’s a sense that things will turn out well; we don’t know exactly how but we know that when it’s all over, we did it. Agency sweetens accomplishment. Agency makes uncertain times bearable, it can even transform confusion and anxiety into something constructive, putting us back on the path. A simple way to never get lost when you create an image. When you start creating images it's beneficial you plan ahead. I know you have a million ideas, but try and keep it simple. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿: → Find a mood great reference. → Look for a composition photos. What should you look for? These days I look at everything: → Concept art → Cinematography → Fashion Photography → Architectural photography Whatever gets the creative juices going. Doing this at the start of a project, will speed up your process A LOT. I spend a great time doing this, instead of rushing into creating. You leave out ALL the guesswork. It's your GPS in image creation. Need to know what the exposure looks like? → Check reference. Not sure how warm the yellows should be? → Check reference. Looking for a cool composition? → You got it, check refences. But do embrace happy accidents ;) PS: Pureref or Miro are great tools to gather everything into one whiteboard. "Just a few pictures," they say! Why is this phrase a problem? Because that cinnamon stick you see in a picture? It’s not just casually lounging there👀; it’s strategically placed, probably after 20 minutes of deliberation. 😂 Let me take you through the art behind - Just a few pictures! ~First, there’s me 🙋♂️, the photographer striving to make those product shots look like they’re auditioning for a starring role in a Nicholas Sparks movie.   ~The stylist who arranges those props with surgical precision.  ~That’s hours of setting up, tweaking, and maybe even a brief argument with a strobe light that just doesn’t want to cooperate.  ~when it’s all done, we’ve got editors polishing every frame so that the product looks like it was crafted by the gods. Believe me, it's just a brief story I am painting. The amount of experience, research, and hard work we all bring as a crew is the only way a product shoot becomes successful. Does that mean you cannot question us about the process? Of course, you can but don't disregard the collective effort and the experience of a talent while you are on it. It’s the imaginary( sometimes real ) story we create on our mood board, the details, and the beautiful output we create around it. And if it really was that easy, you wouldn’t be hiring us, would you? 🤔 PS- "The story narrated is a work of fiction.
