🤷♂️Freelancers often have no idea how big fashion brands work. And fashion brands have no idea about the struggles that freelancers may face. Yet, both need each other. Probably the most common two misunderstandings are these: 💰Payment Terms Understandably, a freelancer looks for part of the payment upfront. How many times has it happened that they weren't paid at all? On the other hand, given the complexity of big brands, tax implications, and automation, it is not always feasible. Payment terms are fixed, and to have exceptions, you need the signatures of people at a high enough level that getting there with a contract for a few thousand EUR is impossible. It's important to: 🔍Read the contract carefully. 🔍Clarify payment timelines, approval processes, and penalties for delays. 🔍Seek feedback from other freelancers about their experiences with the brand. It's difficult for a big fashion brand to risk its image for a few thousand EUR. Still, those few thousand are your bills paid, so use all the tools at your disposal to protect your rights and understand the complexity of the decision-making machine, especially regarding budgets. 🔄Ownership and Responsibilities A freelance Designer probably also has knowledge about product development and even about manufacturing. They can often provide design, sample, or even production services. It works differently in a big fashion brand. When you collaborate with a Fashion Designer, they likely don't know how to adjust the pattern or oversee problems that may happen during the sample-making process, or they simply can't. Companies have to divide ownership and roles to deliver collections on time, considering the number of products they make every season. When embarking on a project within a more structured role than those typically found in smaller brands, it's crucial to understand: 👗Collaboration is critical, with teams dedicated to specific categories. 👗Don't expect tasks outside your contracted role, like pattern adjustments, if you're hired for sketch design. 👗Offering advice beyond your contract is okay, but don't expect all suggestions to be implemented. Approach any perceived mistakes tactfully, as direct criticism can be poorly received. Providing end-to-end service is great and will probably be helpful in gigs with smaller fashion brands. Dear Freelancer, PRESENTATION MATTERS So recently I had an experience that really changed my perspective of thinking. After my birthday, everyone who saw my outfit loved it and wanted to know the hand that crafted the beautiful piece. One of my friends specifically asked for the persons contact and within days my designer had a gig from my friend to make her birthday outfit also. After my designer was done with making the dress, she took a picture of the dress with a poor camera and sent the pictures to my friend. My friend was infuriated and thought she had just wasted her money and time on nothing. Surprisingly when she went to confront my designer, it turned out that the dress looked more beautiful in real life than in picture. It was a perfect fit. I know most Freelancers has submitted jobs that has been rejected. And it's not because you did not meet the client requirements but it is because you didn't package it to suit the clients standard. Hi! A client is looking to build a stack of creative service providers and freelancers to work on their brand. At this point, they need the following immediately… 1/ A boutique design agency that has experience of doing celebrity photoshoots and print campaigns. You will be expected to arrive at creative concepts, manage the shoot and then deliver a print campaign. We will manage the celebrity. This is slightly urgent and we need to close this in this week. 2/ Freelance scriptwriters who can write TVCs, AVs and other films. PLEASE NOTE THESE BEFORE SENDING IN YOUR DETAILS 1/ They are a major player in men’s innerwear and are ramping up their offering in the other categories - women, kids, thermals, socks etc. They would like you to have some experience in that category. 2/ The client is a family-run business and this means they typically need a lot of iterations and options. Please expect feedback like “maza nahi naya”. But I would try and help here. So you need to be flexible. 3/ They have been in business for more than 30 years now and have seen GREAT success. So they know what works for them and thus are very headstrong. 4/ No, they are not that bad people :D. They are respectful, pay on time and are rational. The Freelancer Hustle: Sunshine, Coffee & The Daily Grind (But Mostly the Grind) ☀️☕️ The freelancer life might have you picturing beachside brainstorming sessions (especially when you design swimwear!), but the reality involves a lot more hustle. This is my desk: planner open, iced coffee ready, and my laptop fully charged- ready to send emails! Let's talk about pitches. They're the not-so-glamorous backbone of freelancing. There are days when sending cold emails and connecting feels like throwing pebbles into the ocean. Finding clients takes consistent effort, and there will be times when the well feels dry. But here's the thing: every "no" brings you closer to a "yes." This is what I tell myself. The key is to stay consistent with your outreach, even when motivation dips. For me, a well-lit workspace (vitamin D is my friend! Not so much though that it feels like summer in Dubai haha), my favorite iced coffee to fuel my day, and some tasty snacks to fuel creative bursts keep me going. Btw, I just came back from my holiday and I am sooo glad to be back in front of my laptop. I realised I love working on my freelance business and would rather go through the lows of being a freelancer than working for a soul-sucking corporate job. Name a platform or tool that helps you as a freelancer either find jobs, stay organized, or foster community with other creatives. I'll go first and I'll give you three: NOVA- A new platform was curated for freelancers to post jobs and display their work. You need to be referred and approved to get accepted into the app. Once approved, you can give up to three referrals a month. In the last two months of being on the platform, I have worked a handful of gigs to fill in my work gaps as a freelancer. I've also posted jobs looking for PAs when working on larger projects and have hired people after connections I made on the app. KAVYAR- A platform to display your creative work and submit it to various magazines. Some magazines are free to submit, and some require a fee. Kavyar is the only platform I know that creates an opportunity for younger photographers and producers to submit their work to reputable magazines without prior connection Behance- A social platform by Adobe that allows creatives to showcase portfolios and make decks to share with the public. You can use Behance to create a portfolio for your beauty work and then one for your street-style work, for example, so when reaching out to clients, you can show them a more niche version of your work. It's also a great place to get inspired and see quality presentations.
