Sharing CMS Insights from the Field 🔍 Detecting an Intermediate Shaft Bearing Inner Ring Axial Crack 📢 After seeing an anomaly in the CMS data, we recommended the customer to perform a Gearbox borescope inspection (see image below) 🗣️ Once done, the feedback from the site was "Detected failure identical to report's indication" and "Axial crack of intermediate shaft bearing's inner race found during the inspection, mirroring vibration analysis report" 🛠️ There's no way around a full gearbox exchange for such a detection, but - by acting proactively - the asset operator avoids unplanned downtime, secondary damage to other components, etc.. Typically, a single repair like this results in savings in the excess of $100k. How did we do this? Signature Details: Our CMS Engineers saw that the autospectrum revealed elevated Ball Pass Frequency Inner (BPFI) fault harmonics for the rotor-end bearing on the intermediate shaft in the gearbox, along with heightened sidebands of intermediate shaft frequency. From ‘detection’ to ‘risk mitigation’ in 3 months This case underscores the important role of condition monitoring in protecting against catastrophic failures, saving costs, and enhancing operational efficiency. Poll Result Insights Oil Analysis Dominates: No surprises here - oil analysis is preferred for gearbox/bearing fault detection/diagnosis. MCSA/ESA: Interestingly, Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) / Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA) received the fewest votes. IMO, following are the reasons, 1. Overlapping of Target Faults: One reason might be the overlap with vibration analysis. Though there are fault types like broken rotor bars, inter-turn fault, that can be detected early and accurately via MCSA/ESA; other OFF line tests (MCA and other) are used for motors/generators. 2. Ease of Data Collection: Let's face it, grabbing vibration data seems more straightforward. Are current and voltage measurements as easy? Perhaps not, and ease of data collection plays a pivotal role in adoption. This is true for most of the machine setup; situations like motors with special enclosures/submersible pumps and other machines where vibration sensors cannot be installed, ESA can be used. 3. Full Potential Awareness: Is there a gap in understanding the full potential of MCSA/ESA? Beyond electrical issues, these techniques can catch mechanical problems in the drive/driven unit - a fact that might be underappreciated or overlooked. Your Thoughts?
