Did you know that the CCS library has moved to Dunedin. CCS Disability Action is committed to creating more accessible and inclusive communities, and offer a free library for disabled people in New Zealand to ensure everyone has access to good information and resources. They have a nationwide Information Service that provides a wide range of resources on disability and the wider disability sector. Anyone can use the Information Service free of charge, no matter where they are in New Zealand. This includes people they support, parents, families and whānau, health professionals, service providers, researchers, and students. I met with Librarian Krissy last week and she is doing such a good job. Ka pai Krissy! Check them out.... they are a awesome resource for the community. https://lnkd.in/gFGHRFaH

The Economic and Policy Shifts - Finding Balance in Disability Support Continuing our Thought-Provoking Thursdays discussion, we explore the economic and policy shifts impacting day services for adults with disabilities and how we can strike a balance that prioritises both fiscal responsibility and human dignity. 📉 The Economic and Policy Shifts The justification for disassembling day services often hinges on three main pillars: Accountability and Measurable Outcomes: There's a growing demand for programs to justify their existence through measurable outcomes. While accountability is crucial, this emphasis on quantifiable results tends to overshadow the qualitative benefits that day services bring. Improved well-being, enhanced social skills, and greater community integration are hard to quantify but invaluable. The risk is that focusing solely on metrics might neglect the very essence of what makes these services beneficial. Philosophical Shifts: The move towards more integrated, community-based services is gaining traction. The idea is to support individuals in more inclusive, less segregated environments. While the intention is noble, the execution often falls short, leaving gaps in support and posing challenges in ensuring personalised care. Less centralised services can mean more disconnection from specialised support and a safe haven that day services provide. Without centralised day services, individuals might find themselves in community settings that are ill-equipped to provide the care and understanding they require. Economic Pressures: Budget constraints drive many of these changes. Funding cuts or redirections frequently impact the availability and quality of services. These economic considerations often stem from the need to justify taxpayer money usage, leading to initiatives that integrate individuals into unpaid or volunteering work. However, this shift does not guarantee that society will be more welcoming or less critical of public funds spent on disability support. Without adequate structures in place, these individuals may face greater scrutiny and isolation, defeating the purpose of integration. #ThoughtProvokingThursdays #DisabilitySupport #Inclusion #DayServices #CommunityIntegration #SocialCare #PolicyDevelopment #Advocacy #HumanDignity #InclusiveSociety

Disability Pride Month - Day Ten: Self-Diagnosis and the Journey to Proper Diagnosis Understanding oneself is a powerful journey, especially for those navigating the complexities of disability. Today, I want to talk about the importance of self-diagnosis and the often lengthy path to receiving a proper diagnosis. Self-Diagnosis is Valid: Self-diagnosis is a critical first step for many in recognizing and understanding their experiences. It’s a process of self-awareness and education, allowing individuals to identify symptoms and seek out resources that resonate with their lived experiences. The Journey to Official Diagnosis: For many, the journey to a formal diagnosis can be long and challenging, filled with barriers such as limited access to healthcare, long waiting lists, and financial constraints. During this period, self-diagnosis can provide validation and a sense of direction. Empowerment through Knowledge: Acknowledging one’s condition through self-diagnosis empowers individuals to seek accommodations, build supportive communities, and advocate for their needs. It fosters resilience and self-advocacy, crucial aspects of thriving with a disability. Community Support: It’s essential to support and uplift those on this journey. Understanding and acceptance from friends, family, and colleagues can make a significant difference. Let’s continue to recognize and respect self-diagnosis as a valid and valuable part of the disability experience. Together, we can create a more inclusive and understanding world. #DisabilityPrideMonth #SelfDiagnosis #DisabilityAwareness #Inclusion #Advocacy #Empowerment #Support

Empowering Financial Support for Disability: RDSP Awareness POST #7- Canada Disability Savings Grant (CDSG) Over the upcoming weeks, I'll be sharing RDSP Infocapsules, valuable resources provided by the ESDC, to spread awareness and knowledge about the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). While these resources may be a bit technical as they were crafted for RDSP issuers, I believe they contain insightful information beneficial to everyone. Should you have any inquiries about these posts or the RDSP itself, I'm here to assist and clarify. It's crucial for people to not only be aware of the existence of this program but also to understand that there's support available to help navigate and secure its significant benefits. As part of my mission to educate and connect 1000 individuals in 2024, I'll be seeking your help to share this vital information across various platforms or with individuals in your circle who might find it beneficial. Moreover, consider initiating discussions in the workplace about RDSP. If any employers or HR representatives are interested in organizing a webinar or in-person seminar (location permitting) on RDSP and DTC, please don't hesitate to reach out. I collaborate with a commendable team equipped to offer guidance, education, and support, providing additional financial assistance to employees living with disabilities or caring for loved ones with disabilities. Less stress at home equals less stress at work! Let's work together to empower financial support and alleviate the challenges faced by those living with disabilities. Your involvement can make a meaningful impact. Connect today or book a zoom to discuss: https://lnkd.in/eXeUZZk **Please note, this document was issued January 7, 2022 so information contained is correct for that publication. July is Disability Pride Month 🎉, a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of the disability community. At Lipodystrophy United, we are proud to stand with individuals living with lipodystrophy, highlight their stories, and advocate for greater awareness and inclusion. Lipodystrophy is a rare condition that affects the body's ability to store fat, often leading to serious complications such as diabetes that qualify as disabilities under ADA. Despite these challenges, our community continues to inspire us with their determination and courage 💪. This month, we are especially dedicated to amplifying their voices and celebrating their accomplishments. Disability Pride Month is an opportunity for all of us to: Raise Awareness 🗣️: Educate others about lipodystrophy and the unique challenges faced by those living with this condition. Advocate for Accessibility 🚪: Ensure that healthcare, workplaces, and communities are inclusive and supportive of people with disabilities. Celebrate Resilience 🏆: Recognize and honor the daily victories and long-term achievements of those with lipodystrophy and diabetes. Trusted Advisor, Leader, Mentor, vCIO, Customer Advocate, A11y, I help people "Work Smarter, Not Harder"
I had no idea these existed until only a few months before my 49th birthday. If any of your family, friends, colleagues have a disability, they may be eligible for the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) or Disability Tax Credit (DTC). I encourage people to talk about these things. Help your people through the process. Paperwork, expenses and effort increase when you have a disability. Any help you can get, you should pursue. Max out your matched contributions. Note: Contribution to the RDSP is no tax benefit for you in the year you make your contribution, not like the RRSP. #WorkSmarterNotHarder #DEIA #DTC #RDSP #Accessibility #Disability #Tax
