Complex Projects: Stop avoiding Systems Engineering! 📘“Complex projects are characterized by uncertainty, ambiguity, dynamic interfaces, significant political or external influences, and often extend beyond the technology cycle of the involved technologies. They can be defined by effect, but not by solution.” ICCPM: https://lnkd.in/gPfMRkmD 📖 Although there is no universally accepted definition of complex projects, Remington and Pollack identify four types of complexity, with ICCPM adding a fifth, Socio-Cultural Complexity. These types include: 🏛 Structural Complexity: Involves multiple project partners, stakeholders, or suppliers; a large number of interconnected activities; and interdependence. 🚀 Technical Complexity: Entails the development of new technologies, products, or services. 🚦 Directional Complexity: Features misalignment of project goals or expectations, hidden agendas, or loss of original intent when handing over to a new team. ⌛ Temporal Complexity: Occurs with shifting environments or strategic directions over time, often experienced during mergers or changes of government. 🌍 Socio-Cultural Complexity: Concerns human interactions and needs, diversity, unconscious bias, organizational culture, and societal expectations. These dimensions frequently contribute to the challenges in achieving on-time and on-budget completion of complex projects.
