A picture is worth a thousand words, but it never really captures all the effort that goes into setting up complex tests! 🤓 Here’s a quick look at the setup for the test of a shear web attachment test on our #composite #lattice #satellite central tube cylinder using digital image correlation. This attachment sustained a 6500N loading without slip or failure, passing all design criteria. Developing & managing advanced tests like this are a common part of what we do in ATG Engineering! Tests were performed at the University of Galway Engineering Department with the help of ÉireComposites Teo Contact us to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gb9p-uW3 #ThowbackThursday #innovation #engineering #space #ESA #irelandinspace #enterpriseireland

This looks spectacular but is actually the opposite of what we wanted to see here. The picture shows one of the pyro-valves of our rocket development project “SR Dorado”. In particular, it is one of the pressurization valves which control the flow of Helium into the tanks of the rocket to pressurize the propellants. It is being developed by one of our members based on an old soviet design for a fire suppression system. Testing showed us a minor (and very fixable) problem with the design as it stands: The sealant of the pyrotechnic actuator was not strong enough to contain the pressure generated by the pyro charge, blasting all the actuation gases - and a lot of sparks - out the back of the valve instead of actuating the piston of the valve. We think this is a perfect example of why verification and testing, especially of custom parts, is such an important step in engineering. Now we have the necessary information to refine the design and fix the issue before we conduct the next tests. We want to let you take part in all the ups and downs of our projects, not just the flashy success stories but also the problems we face – and they can be just as flashy! The project SR Dorado is part of the STERN III project by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., financed by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz. Discover the accuracy of a mechanically assembled, all-cordierite, reflective optical system in cryogenic applications using Kyocera's CO720 and CO220 Fine Cordierite. Although a reflective optical system can theoretically realize ideal optical designs, it is not always an optimal choice compared with a refractive system due to its challenges in achieving high wavefront accuracy. A promising solution is to build a system of mirror optics by mechanically assembling all the optical and structural components made of cordierite, which is a ceramic with a very low thermal expansion coefficient that can be mirror polished.
