I'm so excited to share that Share My Meals is now a member of the Zero Food Waste Coalition! The ZFWC is a group of companies, non-profit organizations, cities, and other entities working to improve the food system at federal, state, and local levels. This week, I attended the first ZFWC in-person advocacy event on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, meeting with house members to add our voice to the case for more precise food safety guidelines around food donation. By joining the Zero Food Waste Coalition, Share My Meals is aiming to accelerate progress in addressing food waste and build momentum by partnering with other stakeholders across the food system. I had a chance to meet with other advocates and to discuss reducing food waste and ensuring food security for all with House and Senate Representatives. My highlight was to meet with the inspiring Chellie Pingree, Representative for Maine who introduced the NO TIME TO Waste Act and reintroduced the ‘Food Date Labeling Act 2023’. 🌍 It’s #WorldFoodDay, a great opportunity to reflect on the importance of food resilience, food accessibility, and waste reduction. Globally, 733 million people are facing hunger, and this issue is becoming more pressing in Aotearoa. In Pōneke, we’re lucky to have an ecosystem of organisations that tackle food waste head-on while providing essential support to our vulnerable communities. These groups aren’t just feeding people – they’re contributing to a sustainable, resilient food system. We'd like to use today occasion to thank Wellington’s food heroes and celebrate their mahi. 🙌 Kaibosh Food Rescue partners with over 90 businesses, distributing surplus food to 150+ charities and community groups – providing 11.5 million meals and redistributing over 4 million kilograms of kai. 🌱 Kaicycle Incorporated turns food waste into rich compost, helping to grow nutrient-rich produce in the city. Their community composting and urban farm initiatives are transforming how we manage waste and grow kai in urban spaces. 🥕 Seeds To Feeds has facilitated 200+ community events, encouraging Wellingtonians to grow, share, and celebrate locally sourced food, fostering stronger neighbourhood connections through kai. 🍽️ Everybody Eats NZ serves more than 25,000 chef-prepared meals annually, all from food that would otherwise go to waste. Their inclusive koha dining model makes food accessible to everyone, while reducing food waste. 🍲 The Free Store on Willis Street ensures surplus food from local businesses reaches those in need, building a culture of generosity and inclusion. 🍜 Compassion Soup Kitchen has been serving the community for over a century, preparing over 6,500 meals a month for Wellington’s most vulnerable residents. The Council is proud to support many of these organisations, but they wouldn’t exist without the tireless work of volunteers. The The Global FoodBanking Network impact report reveals that by rescuing surplus food, food banks curbed a staggering 1.8 million metric tons of carbon emissions—equivalent to taking 400,000 cars off the road for a year! With a 25% surge in food distribution, the impact by food banks reached 40 million people across 45 countries, providing fresh produce through innovative partnerships with farmers. This week the Rabobank Canada team spent time volunteering with Second Harvest and supporting their mission to grow their innovative, efficient food recovery network to fuel people and reduce the environmental impact of avoidable food waste. Did you know that annually, 58% of all food produced is lost and wasted in Canada? That is 11.2 million tonnes of edible food that goes to landfill and 5.6 million Canadians who are food insecure. It is humbling to see firsthand and understand the edible food waste and food insecurity that can be prevented. Second Harvest rescues food while reducing the country’s environmental footprint by keeping surplus food out of landfills and reducing harmful greenhouse gases, a leading source of human-caused climate change. Second Harvest works with food businesses across the supply chain, including producers, distributors, retailers, hotels, and restaurants, to collect their surplus food, then connect that food to charities and non-profit organizations, coast to coast to coast. These organizations use the food to feed their local community. Whether it is a shelter in Vancouver or a meal program in Iqaluit, Second Harvest is proud to support partners across the country, and we are proud to support Second Harvest. The team spent a morning with Second Harvest sorting surplus vegetables from local farms to select the food that can still be used for food. Together we were able to rescue over 600 pounds of surplus vegetables from going to waste. Did you know that one-third of all food produced in the world is lost or wasted? At Ahold Delhaize, we understand the impact a global organization of our size and scope has on the planet. We work hard to accelerate decarbonization in our value chain, protect nature and biodiversity and scale circular models for packaging and unsold food.  As this Sunday marks The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), we support the global call to tackle this problem by reducing food waste across our business by 50% by 2030 compared to our 2016 baseline.    This summer we entered a partnership with The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), an international non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating food insecurity while reducing food loss and waste. Amongst others, GFN partners with Feeding America, a nonprofit network of 200 food banks leading the effort to alleviate hunger in the United States. With Feeding America’s Food Rescue Challenge initiative, they mobilize communities and organizations to rescue quality food that would otherwise go to waste, ensuring it reaches those who need it most. While we celebrate the abundance and diversity of food, let's also acknowledge the stark reality that millions around the world still face hunger and malnutrition. 🙌 💦 This year's theme, "Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind," highlights the critical link between water and food security. Today is National Day of Awareness of Food Waste! On a Sunday too. Over 11 years ago we became the first Social Supermarket and Surplus food hub in Bradford. The landscape has changed rapidly since then. Four years ago we set up FoodSavers where members can save money on their weekly shop, save food from going to landfill and save into a recognised credit union scheme. The model has taken off and we have supported 24 groups to transition to our model in Leeds, Calderdale and Bradford. Surplus food has played a huge part in addressing food insecurity, but it shouldn't have to be this way.
