To celebrate International Women's Day, I attended the Royal Town Planning Institute East Midlands Webinar on 'Designing Places for Women and Girls.' The webinar explored the notion of gendered places - this being how individuals of different genders experience place. Dr Karen Horwood also discussed the concept of the 15-minute city, a hot topic in practice. A key takeaway for me was who's 15 minutes it is... Is it a parent with a child, stopping to play at every puddle, an elderly person who needs to rest during their journey, or is it an individual who chooses a longer route for safety reasons? This reinforces the need to look at a space from all lenses within practice. The webinar also raised the important questions of, "what do we need right now", and "what can be done in your current role". These are questions as women in the built environment we must discuss regularly to ensure processes are implemented. As after all...good planning and design takes time and investment. Thank you Dr Karen Horwood, Vicky Payne and Nivedita V. for your insightful presentations! Should you have any other reading suggestions than those within your presentation, please share! #IWD24 #planning #design

The Lack of Effective Toilet Space for Women Welcome back to today’s article. In this article, I will discuss critical private spaces for women, why this is important for society, and why toilet space is an undiscussed issue for improving conditions for women. Due to their bodies, women need longer toilet time. This is due to factors such as the burden of childcare falling upon women and women having to go through the process of menstruation. This was discovered on average: women spend 90 seconds using the toilet compared with men, which takes 40 to 60 seconds. Also, women are experiencing the closure of public toilet spaces, and… Continue reading

An important reminder from AXA Health this #InternationalWomensDay, with a new video bringing to life why we need to prioritise women’s health in the workplace. Despite 68% of women facing health issues during their careers, almost a third feel unsupported by their employers. Women said they were concerned about hindering career growth, leaving the workforce prematurely and 83% experienced financial impact as a result of a period of poor health at work. Not only does it impact individual women and their careers, but also costs the economy a staggering £20.2bn a year. As the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #InspireInclusion, I hope this inspires more employers to prioritise women’s health in their workplaces. Our report provides recommendations for businesses to better support their female employees, including flexible working arrangements, mental health support, access to information, health and well-being support, and physical workplace adjustments. Thank you Pallavi Bradshaw, Catherine Fryer and Adele The Menopause Coach for speaking so powerfully on this topic.

As we celebrate National Women's Health Week, let's take a moment to appreciate the critical role that immigrant healthcare workers play in the healthcare industry. From doctors to nurses and other essential staff, these individuals have been instrumental in ensuring that women receive the care they need, regardless of their background. At the same time, it's essential to recognize the importance of a diverse and inclusive healthcare industry that can address the unique needs of women from different backgrounds. Let's continue to support and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare to ensure that all women receive the care they deserve. #NationalWomensHealthWeek #ImmigrantHealthcareWorkers #DiversityandInclusion #WomenInHealthcare #HealthEquity Read more about Upwardly Global’s commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive healthcare system here: https://lnkd.in/g3YMrgqx
