Open source was coined following the publication of the essay « the Cathedral and the Bazaar » by Eric Raymond, who propose rules to establish a methodology to produce software inspired by Linux "project management". A book inspiring to think on how to produce digital resources more broadly, as openness reach (open) science, (open) education, (open) hardware and so on. I would recommend the reading of this book, a classic which gain traction in the industry, for Netscape particularly, which led to Mozilla and open source.
