It's frustrating to me that nearly all articles and posts on the low-carbon transition focus on renewable energy deployment. Energy demand at the building scale determines the size, location, and cost of renewable energy and transmission lines that seem to be everyone's focus. What does this have to do with architects? The building envelope - especially a reasonable window to wall ratio - has a direct impact on a majority of carbon emissions at the building scale, and an indirect impact on many other things such as refrigerant emissions. Zero Emission Building: Environmental Future Worldwide !! https://lnkd.in/gPWr2Y6i A zero-emission building, also known as a net-zero-energy building or a carbon-neutral building, is a building that produces as much (or more) energy as it consumes over the course of a year, resulting in zero net emissions. These buildings are designed and constructed to be highly energy-efficient and to generate their own renewable energy on-site. 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Zero-emission buildings are designed with a focus on maximizing energy efficiency through the use of insulation, energy-efficient windows, and other building envelope measures. 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Zero-emission buildings are equipped with on-site renewable energy generation systems, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, or geothermal heat pumps. 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲: Some zero-emission buildings incorporate energy storage systems, such as batteries or thermal storage, to store excess renewable energy generated during peak production periods. This stored energy can then be used during periods of high demand or when renewable energy generation is low. Query for LEED/Building Energy Specialists Only. . In reference to LEED, Energy and Atmosphere category credit: Renewable Energy Production. We need two parameters: 1. Equivalent cost of usable energy produced by the renewable energy system 2. Total building annual energy cost The 2nd parameter is understandable. However, for the 1st parameter i.e. cost of usable energy, my question is do we consider the cost of unused energy on weekends? In Office buildings. If we do not consider then the % renewable energy is skewed and doesn't fulfil the credit intent. Can we utilize that unused energy by storing it into batteries? There is a related pilot credit to this: Direct Current Power Systems, under LEED v4. My concern is would we be able to show improved cost savings if we can store and use the renewable energy generated on weekends? #usgbc #energy #renewableenergy #solarpower #alpin #
