Now that IUPUI is splitting into Indiana University Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis 😭, why doesn’t the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis 💵 commemorate this historic divide with a new mascot – a cute, but highly intelligent, cat? 🐈⬛ Nothing makes a brand quite as memorable quite as quickly as a cat. Here are a few examples: 😺 Pirate Cat – Put the Indianapolis Monon Trail on the map. 🛣️ Residents raised $10K+ for a memorial along the trail. I petted him six months before he passed away. RIP. 😺 Sir Indiana Bones – Official cat and MVP of the Oklahoma Museum of Osteology. 🩻 Most visitors are introduced to the museum through him. Arguably more popular than the skeletons. 😺 Bap Kat – Made Cards Against Humanity trendy again. ♠️ His sunglasses are cooler than Tom Cruise’s in Top Gun. Has a website (hoodies cost $45). You can even subscribe to a mailing list. We could also create an app that tracks the cat’s location so students can pet, feed, or photograph him at any time. 🥰 It would be a great way for current and prospective students to engage with the college. Folks, it’s Giving Day for Canisius University, and if you are interested in a unique, interdisciplinary program to support, consider Professor Yvonne Widenor’s Makerspace. For several years, and even through the pandemic, Yvonne has provided opportunities for students to gather for a variety of art and craft activities. I’ve seen firsthand where a diverse group of Canisius students participate in her Makerspace events. If these were simply “make n’ take” pastime activities, that would be worth supporting by itself. But more happens here: students learn by doing (“embodied cognition,” in educational jargon), meet other students, and often connect what they do in Makerspace with their courses, and with the community. With it’s Ignatian tradition, Canisius is especially prepared to expand Makerspace. In their first century, historian John O’Malley, SJ notes, “the Jesuits became the most prolific patrons and producers of arts in the world,” and have since become prominent in art, architecture, theater, and scientific instrumentation. They are, and encourage us to be, “contemplatives in action,” focusing our efforts in service of others. Yvonne’s participants have produced art to beautify the campus, and winterwear to warm those in need. Consider the story of Norman Borlaug, an agronomist whose work in developing high-yield, disease-resistant wheat varieties led to the Green Revolution, saving over a billion people from starvation. His individual contribution changed the course of history. 2. The Power of Kindness and Compassion: Acts of kindness, no matter how small, can have a ripple effect. Take for instance, Oseola McCarty, a washerwoman who saved her earnings and donated $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi to fund scholarships for students in need. Her generosity has empowered countless individuals to pursue their dreams. 3. The Significance of Being Loved: Knowing that someone loves you can be a beacon of hope. Fred Rogers, better known as Mr. Rogers, often shared this simple yet powerful message on his show, creating a sense of belonging and love for millions of children. 4. The Importance of Self-Worth During Tough Times: During adversity, remembering your worth can be a lifeline. Malala Yousafzai, who stood up for girls' education and survived an assassination attempt, is a testament to the strength that comes from believing in oneself and one's cause. In conclusion, your life is a masterpiece that cannot be recreated. Your existence matters, and the love that surrounds you is a testament to the impact you have on the world.
