Our volunteers are truly the heartbeat of Apex for Youth and mentors are the driving force of change for our youth in our programs. Our mentors are the people helping our mentees get exposed to new opportunities to explore their interests and build their strengths and mindsets to help them overcome their everyday challenges. Through mentorship and our programs, our youth start to see themselves in new ways: as individuals with unique strengths and as valuable members of a community 💪❤️ Sid Gopinath shares his mentoring story and how impactful it’s been for him to see his mentee Justin grow over time 🫶 Join us now in becoming a crucial part of our community by becoming a volunteer. Mentoring can foster a sense of belonging and forge a sense of personal identity. Regardless of a young person’s specific needs or circumstances, all youth need to know who they are as individuals and that they belong in this world. Too many American youths are growing up without these core aspects of human development, and in their isolation, they often drift into antisocial or violent behaviors. Mentoring is a cornerstone of a healthy society that helps all citizens contribute and find their positive path.

We support the youth of Hawaii by providing them with peer and adult mentors with the objective that they will strive in their life, and career and a better version of themselves. Happy National Mentoring Month!

Here's a glimpse of their value: Wisdom and Experience: Mentors typically have a wealth of experience in their field. They've encountered various situations, learned from successes and failures, and can share practical knowledge that you might not find in books. Networking: They often have extensive networks and can introduce you to valuable contacts, opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise be challenging to access. Perspective and Feedback: A mentor can offer an outsider's perspective on your decisions, behaviors, and ideas. Honest feedback is incredibly valuable for personal growth and development. Emotional Support and Encouragement: Sometimes, the support and encouragement from a mentor can be crucial during tough times. They can provide motivation and guidance, helping you navigate through obstacles and challenges. Skill Development: Mentors can help you identify and develop specific skills necessary for your goals. Their guidance can fast-track your learning process. Accountability: Having someone to be accountable to can be a powerful motivator. Mentors often act as a source of accountability, ensuring you stay on track with your goals and commitments. Confidence Boost: Knowing that someone experienced believes in your abilities can significantly boost your confidence. This belief can be a catalyst for pushing your boundaries and aiming for higher goals. -AI generated content

Mentorship - particularly with folx who don't have the deep bench of contacts or [do] have identities and experiences distinct from the majority of our field and profession (that may mean YOU) - is crucial. It's game-changing. If you have the capacity, please consider being a mentor. Bring someone in. Teach, sure, BUT ALSO LEARN. It's how we stay sharp. How else you gonna learn what "rizz" means if a younin' doesn't tell you? #Mentorship #Librarian #Libraries #Colorado #Intergenerational #Workforce #Career #Professionalism #CulturalCapital

Developing an adaptable communication style isn't just about linguistic flexibility; it's also about cultivating an environment where vulnerability is met with empathy rather than judgment. Dr. Brené Brown's research on shame resilience underscores the importance of empathy in creating spaces where individuals can share their experiences without fear of ridicule or dismissal. By actively practising empathy and adapting our communication to be more “trauma-informed”, we not only validate the experiences of racialised individuals but also empower them to engage openly and authentically. #HealthyConversations,#EmpathyInAction,#MentalHealthAwareness, #YoungMinds
