5 Facts about Mexico City You May Not Know Mexico City has had different names and occupations throughout its history. In the times of the Mexicas (Aztecs), the city took the name of Tenochtitlan. During the Spanish invasion, it was known as Mexico City. After the Mexican War of Independence, the city took the name of Federal District and remained so until 2016 when it became Mexico City.
