"Sometimes, the most unexpected moments lead to the biggest opportunities." 🌟 My Make-a-Ton story didn’t begin with a registration link or a team submission—it started when I noticed an ID card hanging in a senior’s room. Among a collection of event badges, one ID card in particular caught my attention: Make-a-Ton 5.0. The name, the unique brain-like logo, and the way my senior spoke so highly of it—it all made a lasting impression on me. From that moment, I knew I had to be part of it. Fast forward to my second year at CUSAT, when Make-a-Ton opened registrations. The event had grown, not only in scale but also in design, and I was drawn in. My friends and I put together a team, excitedly submitted our project idea… but we didn’t get selected. I won’t lie—I was disappointed. But when they called for volunteers, I jumped at the opportunity, thinking, "Even if I can’t participate, I’ll be there." Volunteering was truly transformative. It allowed me to be part of something much bigger than I had imagined, collaborating with incredibly talented people. I learned so much from Sunith Vs, who felt like an elder brother, always ready to help, and Gokul Krishna R, whom I saw as the design god of CUSAT. Their guidance and energy made this experience the perfect introduction to the hackathon world and fueled my passion even further. Months later, I got an unexpected call from Aswin Pradeep, our leader. He asked if I’d be interested in organizing Make-a-Ton this year. Organizing the very event that once captured my imagination—it felt surreal. I said yes in a heartbeat. With Major League Hacking as an official partner this year, and a passionate team working to make #MakeATon2024 the best yet, I’m more driven than ever to exceed expectations. It's not rocket science (and I've said this many times before) but last night I was, once again, reminded of a key principle of growing and building a successful business. And that reminder came to me courtesy of our Wildgoose Team (pictured below... and those who couldn't make it too!) who joined us for our We Are Wildgoose Xmas get together. They have all played such an important part in our Wildgoose family over the last year. 'Surround yourself with great people and you will have a great business. The bigger the dream, the more important the team!' That is so true. I've been around business long enough to know that you are only ever as good as the people in your team. If you surround yourself with great, positive people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, who work hard and play hard and who love and believe in what they do, then you are on a path to great things. As we head into 2024, my resolution is clear: to invest more time in the company of extraordinary people. The skill of building a strong, inspiring team is directly proportional to your business's potential for success. It's a journey that's not just motivating, but it brings out the best in both you and your business too. And so, if you are one of those people who I will be spending time with in 2024, consider yourself one of those extraordinary people who lift me up too. ...and thank you! Earth-a-thon 2024 is here! Since launching its open-source platform in 2018, DemocracyLab has convened more than 30 tech-for-good hackathons aimed at supporting public interest technology. These hackathons have allowed projects to execute a narrow scope of work and make incremental progress toward their long term goals, and volunteers to begin long-term relationships with impactful projects while upskilling and advancing their careers. The Earth-a-thon is another such opportunity for project leaders and volunteers to collaborate and build technology that helps the planet.
