The #PONTON team was very busy during at E-world 2024 in Essen, showcasing innovative solutions and discussing current issues with our many clients.
For those interested in regulations, EMIR Refit took center stage. We are lucky to have Thomas Sonnenberg, who has been elected to the ACER REMIT Expert Group on Wholesale Energy Market Data Reporting, and who leads the implementation of the EMIR Refit package for the Equias CMS.
Wholesale trading continues to shift from brokered OTC trading to exchanges. This makes life tough for the brokers, who have started to pivot to new trade types and service offering. Meanwhile, the size of orders and transactions continues to go down. Algo traders rule in terms of raw number of orders issued – but will exchanges continue to make a comfortable living? At any rate, this explosion of data is hard on storage and transmission. Our co-founder Dr. Michael Merz talked to exchanges including our key account the EEX group about this.
None of this wholesale trading buzz impacts the TSOs very much. They have other things in mind, e.g. how to keep the lights on at reasonable prices with fluctuation of renewable power. Our colleague Thomas Borscha has some good news to share in this regard. Redispatch 2.0 can be a success!
Even though prices and volatility have calmed down, many utilities are still utterly focused on security of supply. PPAs seem like a good idea in this regard. Whether this vertical integration will be here to stay for many years?
The jury is still out, but Tilo Zimmermann talked to a number of traders, lawyers and risk managers. Tracking and valuing PPAs will be a nightmare soon. We need a European standard, but it seems no single association is wholly responsible for it.

This was our 20th E-world – it felt like a class reunion, but also like the start of a new chapter. E-world 2024 showcased PONTON's commitment to innovation in the face of industry shifts.
