The raccoon raiding your trash can and the bats that triggered COVID are carriers of zoonotic diseases, i.e., infections that transmit from animals to humans. This route of transmission is a major pathway by which viruses and bacteria find their way into human hosts. We can’t let ourselves be sitting ducks for the next highly infectious zoonosis to come along, so monitoring, technological innovation, awareness, and policy shifts are essential. Learn more about zoonotic diseases and where they come from. #WorldZoonosesDay #ZoonoticDiseases #StoryMD #StoryMDHealth https://str.md/9YEr5p

### 6. **Pest and Disease Susceptibility** - **Increased Vulnerability**: Stressed plants are more susceptible to pests and diseases. For example, insects may target weaker plants, and pathogens can take advantage of stress-induced openings in plant tissues. - **Reduced Defense Mechanisms**: Environmental stress can weaken a plant's natural defense systems, making it harder for the plant to combat infections or pest attacks.

Over 60% of infectious diseases in humans originate from animals. On World Zoonoses Day, let's join forces to raise awareness about these diseases, the critical importance of preventing their spread, and the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). AMR could cause 10 million deaths a year by 2050 if no action is taken. Together, we can create a healthier future for both humans and animals. https://lnkd.in/dGhbqQW4 #WorldZoonosesDay #HealthFacts #AMR #antimicrobialresistance #zoonotic #zoonoticdiseases #zoonoticdisease #zoonoticinfections #zoonoticpreventionfornation

This is cause for real concern. Not just in Europe either; Aedes albopictus is alive and well in my own state of Georgia, US. It's only a matter of time before many debilitating and deadly #vectorborne diseases stage a comeback in North America, and it's gonna take a robust #diseasesurveillance and #vectorcontrol strategy to combat them. Yet one more reason why we need to greatly strengthen our public health infrastructure now, before the next crisis.

Research ~ ~ Analytics ~ ~ Communications .................... History is an unending dialogue between the present and the past
#Learning Just completed an OpenWHO course titled: "Mpox: Introductory course for African outbreak contexts." as prepared by OpenWHO World Health Organization #Monkeypox is a re-emerging infectious disease caused by a #virus transmitted to humans from infected animals, most commonly rodents. It can be spread to other people but person-to-person transmission alone cannot easily sustain an outbreak. The clinical presentation is similar to that seen in the past with smallpox but less severe. #Smallpox was eradicated worldwide in 1980; however, mpox still occurs sporadically in parts of Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests. Typically, case fatality in #mpox outbreaks has been 1-10% but with appropriate care, most patients will recover.

Climate change and Neglected Tropical Disease Specialist - Researcher | Lecturer | Presenter | Author | Reviewer
The spread of #Aedes mosquitoes to more northerly latitudes in recent years is a stark reminder of how #climatechange is affecting potential transmission of vector-borne #NTDs. The presence of Aedes is a necessary but not sufficient risk factor for transmission of arboviruses. The 'suffiicient' component is going to be composed of various risk factors. Here, I am adapting the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change framework combination of Hazard, Vulnerability and Exposure. Hazard - the landscape features - is the habitat suitable? Vulnerability - is a specific population unable to cope -e.g. due to socioeconomic, behavioural or other factors? Exposure - structural factors - e.. state of the health service, resources and assets to prevent, treat, manage patients The value of this approach is that it offers an accessible framework for assessing risk. The challenge is understanding the weight of each component and the nature and extent of interactions.
