On the side of a road in the Polish countryside, I accompany a government veterinary inspector as they inspect a truck of sows. This fieldwork is the culmination of many months of planning and coordination, not least to ensure that a roadside inspection with the police is possible. What are the challenges they encounter in assessing welfare? How do they balance the requirements of legislation with what they encounter in reality? What does animal welfare mean to them? I will combine insights from this fieldwork with my experiences in Italy and Finland earlier this year in a report for EURCAW-Pigs that will offer some recommendations for how inspectors can be supported in the critical work of animal welfare enforcement. #AnimalWelfare #PigWelfare #HumanAnimalRelations #Audit #AnimalWelfareInspection

"A century of improving animal health and welfare" Ever since humans inhabited the earth, animals have been an integral part of our lives and sustainability. Whether they assist in work, provide a source of food and livelihoods, or simply as our companions, their existence, health and well-being are intertwined with our own. Because we share a special bond with animals, it is our responsibility to care for their health and welfare. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) was created 100 years ago for this very purpose. From setting standards to amplifying the voice of the veterinary workforce in the global health agenda, let us reflect on our journey: a century of improving animal health and welfare. Glorious saga of WOAH......

Even with the top estimate of 1419.8 inspectors employed across the UK to conduct animal welfare inspections on farms, this would still mean a ratio of one inspector for every 205 farms between 2018 and 2021. 'Manifestos matter – and are crucial for advancing animal welfare' - Lorraine Platt in ConservativeHome Excellent article documenting achievements of Conservative Government, but arguing there is much more to be done. "Our 2024 Manifesto for Animals outlines the following primary asks critical for advancing animal welfare. - Commit to a fixed and fair phase-out period of using farrowing crates for sows and gilts in the UK with ongoing transitional support for farmers during the phase-out period. - Commit to a fixed and fair phase-out period for enriched cages for laying hens in the UK with ongoing transitional support for farmers during the phase-out period. - Introduce mandatory animal welfare labelling on all meat products for human consumption. - Legislate to ensure that farmed fish have the equivalent legal protection to that of terrestrial farmed animals, including at the time of slaughter." My article on ConservativeHome today urges for proposals to advance farm animal welfare to be included in the Manifesto

We must progress in animal welfare, not regress. The presence of dedicated and educated staff is crucial for the well-being of both animals and humans. The number of inspections was already low in 2018 and appears to have decreased dramatically. Even with the top estimate of 1419.8 inspectors employed across the UK to conduct animal welfare inspections on farms, this would still mean a ratio of one inspector for every 205 farms. The current framework for industry oversight desperately needs to be restructured.
