We’re excited to share that Greenspace’s Harry Williams will present alongside Choptank Community Health System’s Director of Behavioral Health, Vicki Rahenkamp LCPC, CCTP, at the North Carolina Community Health Center Association (NCCHCA) conference next week! In this session, Harry and Vicki will provide an overview of Measurement-Based Care and walk through Choptank’s implementation as an example of successfully leveraging MBC in practice at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Two critical keys to achieving better outcomes for ABA services: family engagement and their vision for life after treatment. There are a lot of interesting parallels to ABA services that can be drawn from this article - as well as opportunities for our profession to learn. This publication's focus is on how better public health outcomes can be achieved through understanding how the family unit can be a powerful player in their own care. While ABA services are specific to individualized needs and circumstances, it’s necessary to be aware of the collective impact outcomes will have on the community. Don't be overwhelmed with the thought of impacting public health through increasing family engagement. Change can begin with incremental modifications to how behavior analysts approach prioritizing the family's vision for services, and their engagement throughout the course of care. Start the very first conversation with the end of services in mind - and then let that be your anchor as you tailor the trajectory of treatment. Clinically excellent services should be carried out with humble acknowledgement of the family’s capacity to powerfully impact their own progress. Juneteenth is our nation’s second independence day, commemorating the end of nearly 250 years of chattel slavery in the U.S. As we recognize, celebrate, and reflect on Juneteenth and its legacy, we must also acknowledge that while we have seen progress, we have also lost ground in many places. Racism has and continues to adversely impact the health and prosperity of our entire nation – not just people of color. Racism is a public health crisis, and for the “public” (our communities) to be truly healthy, unjust and avoidable differences in health, life outcomes, and life expectancy cannot exist. Fortunately, the governmental public health workforce is eager and well-positioned to take on racism and its adverse effects on community health. Using data from the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS), my colleagues (Kay Schaffer, MPH and Brian C. Castrucci, DrPH, MA) and I found that over 70% of state and local public health employees believe that addressing racism should be a part of their daily work. This #NationalChildsDay we want to share the impact of the Systems of Care framework: 👉 Improvements in child functioning; 👉 Reductions in internalizing and externalizing symptoms; 👉 Decreases in suicide attempts by 81%; 👉 Decreases in unlawful activities by 48%; 👉 Increases in school attendance by 18%; and 👉 Increases in the proportion of children receiving C grades or better by 28%. What an incredible plan! This plan names the goals, names the actions need to achieve the goals, provides tactics (an operational implementation step), calls out the stewards of the goal, and gives tangible management of success/sustainability. Other schools of public health and schools of graduate study could learn a great deal from this.
