The 1st Regional Coordination Group Meeting of the Nile River Basin Investment Programme (NRBIP) is underway in Kampala, Uganda to validate its short-list of candidate projects. Through multi-stakeholder engagement platforms such as this meeting organised by the Nile Basin Initiative, AUDA-NEPAD continues to support this process by (i) ensuring alignment and contribution to the Agenda 2063 whilst establishing linkages to the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa and (ii) making available the African Infrastructure Database to the RECs, Lake and River Basin Organisations and Member States for data management of the project portfolio. The NR-BIP is a high-visibility flagship program of jointly identified transformative regional investment projects that are aimed at driving climate-resilient socio-economic development of the Nile River Basin while reversing environmental degradation within its watershed.

Demonstrated expertise in Pacific region operations, Project Management Office (PMO) environments, UN project management tools, and financial management. Ocean Innovation Challenge (#OIC) Blue Economy Project in PNG: Planned and implemented blue economy initiatives. Secured up to #US$40,000 in funding from the UK OIC Incubator for a 6-month pilot program. Achieved a 27% increase in sustainable blue economy initiatives, positively impacting coastal communities in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Project Assurance and Energy Program Expertise: Demonstrated experience in project assurance, particularly in energy programs. Contributed to waste-to-energy initiatives, promoting sustainable resource management. Financial and Procurement Management: Applied in-depth knowledge of UN financial and procurement rules and regulations. 🌿 My reflections about the masterclass organized by Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Nigeria, as part of the sustainable development goals Advocate Programme (SDGs - AP) Cohort 5! 🌍💡 The master class was divided into two sessions. In the first session led by Ogunleye Kayode Emmanuel, we delved into the fascinating evolution of sustainable development, from early environmental movements to the establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. I learned about the crucial pillars of environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic prosperity, collectively known as the 'triple bottom line'. Understanding these principles is essential for addressing the challenges and seizing the opportunities in sustainable development efforts. In the second session facilitated by Fisayo Adeyemi, we explored the transition to a low-carbon economy and its positive impact on air quality. I gained insights into the myriad opportunities in renewable energy, including carbon markets and electric vehicles, and discovered the importance of integrated energy planning tools in shaping a greener future. As we continue to honor the outstanding achievements of the winners of the Gabriel Al-Salem Foundation's International Award for Excellence in Consulting 2023, let's shine a spotlight on Tajhydro Consulting (Tajikistan) for their remarkable work in the industry and winning the Award in the "Environmental Responsibility" category with the project "Tajikistan Rural Electrification." 🌟👏 Tajhydro Consulting has made an impactful contribution in Tajikistan, specifically in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, through its innovative project focusing on renewable energy-based micro-grids. This initiative aimed to electrify 35 settlements, enhancing electricity access for an average of at least 14 hours a day. The project, which marked a strategic investment, involved constructing small networks for electricity production, including small hydropower plants, wind generators, and solar panels, as well as the necessary infrastructure for electricity distribution. This sustainable approach significantly reduced the usage of diesel fuel, coal, and other traditional fuels, leading to environmental improvements. TajHydro's efforts support not only the local communities in some of Tajikistan's poorest and most remote areas but also contribute to socio-economic development across the border in Afghanistan. The project is a testament to TajHydro's commitment to sustainable development, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing human capital through access to electricity. Their success in overcoming challenges related to high altitude and remote areas and adapting to changing conditions has been commendable. The first phase of the project achieved the basic design, environmental impact analysis, and preparation for the next phase. TajHydro's role in this project exemplifies their excellence in consulting, especially in the field of renewable energy and environmental responsibility, making them a fitting recipient of the International Award for Excellence in Consulting in the “Environmental Responsibility” category. Ghana’s Report on the Implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement ➡ Collaboration: Ghana's Article 6 national framework is a result of collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) and the UNDP Ghana country office. ➡ Approval: In January 2023, Ghana's cabinet approved the framework for the international carbon market and non-market approaches, enabling the implementation of voluntary cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. ➡ Government-to-Government Cooperation: Ghana is involved in 5 bilateral cooperative approaches under Article 6.1 of the Paris Agreement, hosting parties from Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, South Korea, and Liechtenstein. ➡ Ghana-Switzerland Agreement: Twelve projects are being developed under the agreement between Ghana and Switzerland. ➡ Investment and Jobs: Eight projects have reached investment decision points, attracting up to ~ USD 850 million in direct investment, carbon revenues, and fees by 2030. These projects are also expected to create a minimum of 7,000 green jobs. ➡ Project Pipeline Growth: In 2023, the Climate Mitigation Office (CMO) project pipeline almost tripled from 12 in Q1 to 35 in Q4. ➡ Leadership: Private companies and individual entities lead all 35 projects in the pipeline. ➡ Scope of Projects: The 35 pipeline activities cover 10 activity scopes, including solar (2), clean cooking (14), transport (2), nature-based solutions (6), agriculture (4), landfill gas management (1), avoided methane (1), HFC reduction (1), bioenergy (3), and low-carbon water purification (1). #vcm #article6 #carbonmarkets #sustainability #ghana #undp #itmos

As part of our broader initiative “Beyond Emendo,” we're thrilled to share the incredible work our team members undertake beyond our organization. Laura Dam Christophersen, from our Project Consulting team, is currently part of a project with Engineers Without Borders Denmark, CISU - Civilsamfund i Udvikling / Civil Society in Development, and local partner Association pour le Développement Social et Agricol in transforming waste management in Kétao, Togo. Laura is now traveling to Kétao on a project mission where she will, among other things, be part of implementing waste sorting. “Being sent out as an engineer through Engineers Without Borders, we embark on missions to provide follow-up on projects or assist in implementing new technologies. While we primarily contribute technical expertise, the projects are led by local organizations managing day-to-day operations. We empower local project teams by sharing knowledge and skills as needed.” In addition to pursuing her passion for waste management, Laura's decision to engage with this specific project reflects her commitment to sustainable change and empowerment: “My motivation for this project lies in embracing the mindset of empowerment, where we, sitting on the sidelines in Denmark, aim to empower local communities to continue these projects long after we've left.
