Just had an interesting experience where my forensic work and therapeutic consulting converged. A consulting client asked me about a particular treatment program for their loved one that was recommended to them by a hospital. I’ve been retained as an expert on two separate occasions for wrongful death cases involving this particular facility. My response, “Oh I wouldn’t do that. Healthcare should not be a headache. Last year we had gotten a referral from my Dr. to Mayo Clinic. Only to hear back from them that because it was a 6+ month wait they weren’t going to take me as a patient. I was extremely lucky the way things fell place because I was able to get in with epileptologist at the neurology office that I was being seen. Especially because there aren’t many around locally ( Epileptologist) and my Dr. covers more then one area. On the other hand I had a different referral that had been made and an appointment in the works for months. Only to be informed the day of the appointment that it was cancelled partially because the doctor was out sick but, also because the referral was wrong. I had been forewarned that the doctor was great but that the communication staff had was terrible. It took three phone calls to get an appointment set originally. (I hate making phone calls) I talked to my primary Dr’s office about a new referral because I hadn’t heard anything from the other office. It should not be this hard to access healthcare. I’m lucky to have experience in advocacy which helps me to get my needs taken care of. If you’re disabled and don’t have the advocacy experience navigating healthcare or any other access issue is going to be difficult. #Healthcare #Disability #Advocacy

Healthcare professionals in New Zealand, including Nurse Genevieve Brebner and clinic proprietor Tanya Brown, have expressed concerns about the Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC)'s handling of patient complaints. They suggest that the HDC's rigorous approach may inadvertently encourage complaints. Despite resolving issues, the HDC continues investigations, which can sometimes be influenced by emotions or unrealistic expectations. Brown recommends that the HDC should scrutinise complaints more thoroughly and penalise baseless allegations. The HDC claims to formally investigate only 8% of complaints, but this figure may not reflect the entire situation. A recent survey revealed that 80% of 1290 newsGP readers have faced unreasonable complaints. The number of complaints received by Australia’s AHPRA has also increased. Of course patient protection is paramount but thank the lord for the medical protection society. The litigious nature of our industry has led me to contemplate leaving medicine and psychiatry. One wonders why we face ongoing challenges in retaining and recruiting more doctors in this country? Thoughts on this matter?
