A very interesting study was just published in JAMA. I'm just going to leave the authors conclusions here: Most cancer drugs granted accelerated approval did not demonstrate benefit in overall survival or quality of life within 5 years of accelerated approval. Patients should be clearly informed about the cancer drugs that use the accelerated approval pathway and do not end up showing benefits in patient-centered clinical outcomes. #fda #oncology #approvals #acceleratedapproval #efficacy #qualityoflife

There are some very good recommendations from FDA on eligibility criteria for oncology clinical trials: 1. Lab values - They recommend to consider only the lab values important for the drug and the ones which are less important to be more relaxed so more patients could qualify for the study. 2. Washout and concomitant medications - The new guideline recommends that patients are not excluded unnecessary because of concomitant medications. This is particularly relevant for older population which tends to be taking more medications. 3. Performance status - The recommendation is to consider the performance status of the patients with the medical condition rather than aiming for fit patients only. #clinicaltrials #oncology #FDA

Ratio’s CDO Jacob Hesterman, Ph.D., recently co-authored a paper in the Journal of Clinical Oncology titled, “How Can Radiopharmaceutical Therapies Reach Their Full Potential? In this thought-provoking investigation, two important questions are answered, based on 46 anti-cancer agents granted accelerated approval from 2013 to 2017: - What is the clinical benefit of cancer drugs granted accelerated approval? - On what basis are they converted to regular approval? The authors concluded: "Patients should be clearly informed about the cancer drugs that use the accelerated approval pathway and do not end up showing benefits in patient-centered clinical outcomes."
