Making sure you’re speaking with the right people is critical when hiring for a newly created position in the finance and accounting space. Here’s what I look for in candidates for newly created positions: 1. Prior experience: “been there done that” experience will increase the likely hood of someone being successful. 2. Grit: Look for signs of a “stick with it” mentality in their experience. 3. Positive attitude: having a positive mindset will increase the speed at which someone will develop professional relationships and provide a meaningful impact in a new role. This was one of the best Controllers I've spoken with in the past 6 months. And I've talked with some top-notch people recently... These are the reasons I was particularly impressed with this candidate 👇 - They knew the business inside and out. Not just the financials but how their product impacted their customer's business, and the major problem it solved for them. - They are process improvement oriented. They solved the accounting department's problems today and the accounting department's problems 10 years from now by building scalable processes. - The majority of our conversation was about the value they've been able to create. Not the responsibilities I would expect them to do based on their title. - They embrace data analytics and AI. - They work cross-functionally with other business leaders and aren't just siloed to accounting and finance. - They're hungry for new experiences to test themselves.
