My recent 1st-hand experience (I've never encountered phishing like this before and I assumed way too much in the process): I was duped. I thought a company wanted to hire me as a WordPress Developer. The whole process was 100% email correspondence. There was a legitimate assessment of my WordPress knowledge. There was a gradual requests for more of my personal information, but only at the rate that an actual HR Manager would need it (I provided my physical address, fortunately I didn't go beyond that). And ultimately there was a job offer letter to sign, along with assertions of high-end office equipment to register for my home workspace (it was supposedly a remote position). When I finally got smart about it, I contacted this company directly. It was a real company, with a physical address and phone number, but I found out they were not hiring any WordPress or Web Developers. The man I spoke to said I was the second person who called about it. Per my observation, phishing has never been this sophisticated. But I think one of the emails gave it away when it stated "we are using AI to help with our hiring process." Moral: 1. Don't assume. If something doesn't look right, find out about it and repeat until it really makes sense. 2. Demand live communication. Don't wait for them to tell you how to contact them. Look them up yourself. If they're real, you should be able to find them without their help and confirm they actually intended to contact you.

I have applied to several remote jobs that seemed “legit”, however, there are several tells that the job is a scam. Here are some steps I take to protect myself! Firstly, I am wary of quick apply jobs and what information you have on your resume. Don’t give out your address! The most you should have on your resume is your city and state. 📍 Another tell is some postings you may hear from, but you’ll get an email saying something along the lines of, “Your payment will be X amount per week after taxes, direct deposited into your account.” This is an automatic NO! 🚩 🚩 If you are still unsure, I also find it helpful to look up the company. Some scams are as intricate as having a full blow website! If they do, try to find information about executives of the company or employees. I find it helpful to do a deep search on each executive - I even go to lengths of taking snippets of their photos and doing a reverse image search! This will tell you if their photo was a stock photo purchased or copied online. 🕵🏻♂️ There are many fake profiles of “recruiters” on LinkedIn as well. Most will have you message them for more information, then they will give you an email to reach out to. AVOID THIS. 🙅🏼♀️ Finally, as an extra precaution, when filling out applications on sites that require you to create an account to apply, DO NOT use a password you use for anything else! Create something random! This will protect you from compromising your personal accounts. 🔒 Navigating remote job applications requires caution due to the prevalence of scams. To stay safe, I limit personal information on my resume to my city and state and avoid jobs that quickly discuss payment details, especially those promising fixed weekly amounts via direct deposit. I thoroughly vet companies, checking their executives and doing reverse image searches to identify stock photos. I also avoid fake recruiter profiles on LinkedIn that ask for email communication. Lastly, I use unique, random passwords for job application sites to protect my personal accounts. Comment below if this has helped you in your search or you have additional tips to add! #remotework #jobsearch #scams #staysafe

🚨Remote Job Seekers: Beware of Rising Scams🚨 Remote job scams are on the rise, and scammers are becoming more sophisticated. Be cautious when navigating job postings to avoid falling into this unfortunate trap. Look out for these red flags: 🚩 No company name listed 🚩 Unprofessional email address 🚩 Unrealistic salary levels or hourly rates 🚩 No interview process 🚩 Pressuring you to divulge personal information 🚩 Requiring payment before onboarding 🚩 Perks that seem too good to be true (e.g., flexible hours, work from anywhere, high pay/benefits for few required skills/experience) How to ensure a job offer is legitimate: ✔️Verify the company: Research the company's legitimacy using search engines. If nothing comes up, it's a bad sign. Check the Better Business Bureau (bbb. org) for legitimacy. ✔️Check multiple sources: Ensure the job is listed on the company's official website and/or reputable job boards. ✔️Contact information: Look for a named contact at the organization and legitimate email addresses. Scammers often fake legitimacy with similar-looking email addresses (e.g., @companynameHR.com). Contact the company directly through official channels to verify. ✅ ✔️Interview process: A legitimate job will involve a structured interview and outline the process. If the interview is conducted over text/telegram, it's very likely a scam! ✔️Equipment will be issued on hire: Legitimate companies provide the equipment directly to their employees; they do not send you a check to purchase your own equipment. Use your discernment, and don’t give away personal information to protect yourself from these scams. Have you ever encountered a remote job scam? Share your experience, and let's crowdsource more warning signs for support in the comments below. ⬇️ #JobScams #RemoteWork #RemoteJobSearchTips #RemoteCareerAdvice

Remote job listings are becoming increasingly scammy... While remote job boards should do more to audit their listings, you can take a few steps to protect your data yourself. Firstly, research the company. Search for the company name and browse for reviews and references. Find the company website, check the address and telephone number, and search the company registration site for the country where the company is registered. Beware of recent scams with a generic address and no online presence. Secondly, watch out for generic job descriptions. When you read through the job description, you will often find it very generic, with little information about the role, company, and industry. Look for spelling and grammar errors and inaccurate information about the role and industry. Lastly, use LinkedIn to find the company page. Browse through the people associated with the company, read through profiles, and follow your gut instinct. If you have any doubts, do not apply for the role. #jobscams #remotejobs #remotework
