#Diphtheria outbreak situation report in the #WHO-AFRO region as of 25-February-2024: Since the beginning of 2024: 4 countries (#Nigeria, The Republic of #Guinea, #Niger and #Gabon) have reported 5,579 suspected cases; 4,910 confirmed cases and unfortunately 74 deaths giving a Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) of 1.5%. Children aged <15 years were most affected with 70% of total cases and female represented 61% of total cases. Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that can affect the throat and sometimes other parts of the body. It's caused by a bacterium called Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The bacteria release toxins that can lead to the formation of a thick, gray coating in the throat, making it hard to breathe and swallow. The infection is usually spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces or objects. Diphtheria can cause symptoms like fever, sore throat, difficulty breathing, and swollen glands in the neck. In severe cases, it can lead to complications affecting the heart and nervous system, which can be life-threatening.
