After contracting for the last few months, goods exports growth entered the positive territory coming in at $38.45 billion in December 2023 compared to $38.08 billion in the same month last year, whereas merchandise imports fell 4.9 percent on-year. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said, "India is beating the global trends in trade. And we expect higher volumes of exports in the last quarter of the current fiscal. "However, for the April-December period, merchandise exports were down 5.70 percent year-on-year at $317.12. billion, while imports contracted by 7.93 percent to $505.15 billion during the same period. China's Q1 2024 industrial output rose 6.1 per cent, with manufacturing up by 6.7 per cent. Notably, the high-tech manufacturing sector outpaced overall growth, reporting a 7.5 per cent increase, which is a substantial acceleration from the last quarter of 2023 by 2.6 percentage points. The country's ready-made garment exports (RMG) in August rose by about 12 per cent to USD 1.26 billion despite global headwinds and challenges such as high logistic cost, according to the commerce ministry data. Cumulatively, RMG exports during the April-August period of 2024-25 grew by 7.12 per cent to USD 6.39 billion.
