In a first, the 'Kanda Express' train has rolled into Delhi on October 20, 2024. The train arrived in Delhi from Nashik in Maharashtra, carrying not passengers, but onions. For the first time, the central government decided to transport 1,600 tonnes of onions through 42 railway wagons into the Delhi wholesale markets to cool down prices ahead of Diwali. This marks the largest-ever wholesale intervention by the Centre regarding onions. The onion consignment was sold through auction at a base rate of Rs 35/kg, while current retail market rates of onions in Delhi are hovering over Rs 75/kg. Delhi and its nearby markets receive a daily supply of around 2,500-2,600 tonnes of onions, and this single train (equivalent to 53 truckloads of onions) delivered more than half of that quantity in one day. The train, expressively called the ‘Kanda Express’ (with 'kanda' being the Marathi term for onion), will help stabilize retail rates. This decision comes as a cost-effective and efficient measure. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare noted that transporting one rake (equivalent to 56 trucks) from Nashik to Delhi costs Rs 70.20 lakh by rail, compared to Rs 84 lakh by road—resulting in savings of Rs 13.80 lakh per rake. The government stated that onion export prices remained stable, but quantities are under control despite a slight increase following the removal of the minimum export price and a reduction in duty from 40 percent to 20 percent. Logistic vs Supply Chain Once upon a time in the city of Kolkata, there lived a halwai named Babu and his clever assistant, Mishita. Babu, the halwai, was renowned for creating the most delectable sweets in all of Kolkata. His secret? The freshest ingredients and the most efficient kitchen in the city. However, Babu faced a challenge: he needed to source these ingredients from various corners of the metropolis and bring them to his halwai shop. Mishita, his assistant, was a master of transporting goods from one place to another. She knew every street and alley of kolkata, every supplier, and every trick to ensure the ingredients arrived just in time and in perfect condition. When Babu needed sugar, Mishita made sure it was delivered to the shop swiftly, navigating through Kolkata's notorious traffic. This is what we call logistics. One day, Babu decided to create the most magnificent SANDESH the city had ever tasted. But this Sandesh required ingredients from all over India: saffron from Kashmir, cardamom from Kerala, and chena from the remote regions of Bengal. Babu said, "Mishita, we need to gather all these ingredients and have them delivered to our shop. Oh, and while you're at it, make sure we have enough milk and sugar in stock for the next three months. Also, could you check on our delivery scooters to ensure they're ready for the upcoming Durga Puja festival?" Mishita, being the genius she was, realized that this wasn't just a simple delivery task. She had to coordinate with suppliers, manage inventory, ensure the delivery scooters were in top shape, and plan how everything would come together at just the right time to make that perfect Sandesh. She had to think about the entire process from start to finish, making sure nothing went wrong at any stage. So while logistics was like Mishita's usual job of getting the ingredients from one place to another, the supply chain was the whole adventure – planning, coordinating, managing the supplies, and making sure everything from the farm to the halwai shop worked smoothly in the chaotic urban landscape of Kolkata.
