Meredith Meyer Global Workplace & Operations Leader | Builder of Strong Teams and Lightweight Processes | Future of Work | Executive Coach 54m I had the opportunity to sit with P&G innovation legends Gordon Brunner and Bill James a few weeks ago to hear stories from their new book covering 40 years of P&G product development history. A few themes that felt very relevant across time and industry:  ⋙ To create genuine breakthroughs, innovators and technologists need what Bill calls “time at the bench.” Focused, distraction-free time to simply think and do deep work. How often do you allow yourself and your team that time? ⋙ Recognizing a high-potential product innovation can be very straightforward. Gordon applied a simple “wow” test: if you’re getting a “wow” from your target audience when they hear the idea and then again when they try the product, you’re onto something. If you have to rationalize their lack of interest at either point, stop while you’re ahead. ⋙ Every innovation journey is marked by a “valley of death” where things begin to fall apart. My favorite part of the session was when John Pepper corrected me when I asked the authors to share their “product stories.” He reminded all of us that P&G and every organization is made up of “people stories,” not product stories. Behind every great innovation there is often one person whose agency and commitment made the difference when things got really, really hard. Have you ever had an inspiration hit you out of nowhere? That's exactly what happened to me this past Saturday late afternoon. I discovered a massive convention was starting the very next day in town. Now, I could have easily told myself, "This is not enough notice. I should have thought about this sooner. There’s no way I can attend now." But instead, I decided to be unreasonable. At 11pm that night, I started emailing the event organizers, asking if I could participate. I reached out for 9 different meetings, fully expecting it might be too late. Guess what? There was space for me at 7 out of the 9 meetings! The lesson here? Don’t let yourself get in the way of your mission! Sometimes, you have to leap without overthinking. Sure, there are risks, and in those cases, it's wise to consult with your mentors and friends. But often, just taking action—bold, swift, and maybe even a little unreasonable—can lead to amazing opportunities.
