Technology Orchestrator & Strategic Communicator: Guiding businesses through innovative tech solutions and seamless digital transformations.
Five Things I Learned Starting a Podcast I've been toying with the idea of starting a podcast for nearly a decade. This year, alongside my long-time friend and riding partner, Todd, we finally made the leap. On January 30th, we launched "Best Motorcycle Roads," a podcast dedicated to making your next motorcycle trip the best it can be. https://lnkd.in/dCBudQha The journey from concept to launch has been both challenging and enlightening. Here are five key lessons I've learned, which interestingly enough, parallel my recent transition to a Fractional CTO. 1. Niche is the Way Echoing Kevin Kelly's concept of 1000 True Fans, finding a hyper-specific niche feels counterintuitive but is essential. The narrower the focus, the more daunting it seems—worrying about reaching just 20 shows, let alone our goal of 100, felt overwhelming. Yet, the specificity is what makes your content resonate deeply with your audience. 2. Consistency Five episodes in, we're invisible to most, and recognition might not come until 2025. But persistence is our strategy. Weekly episodes are our commitment to building a dedicated following. It's a marathon, not a sprint. 3. Networking The importance of networking cannot be overstated, even if we haven't decided on featuring guests yet. Networking is crucial for promoting the podcast and understanding what our audience seeks regarding motorcycle roads and trips. 4. Audio Quality Our initial recordings were disappointing, to say the least, sounding as though we were in a coffee can. It underscored the importance of investing in good equipment and acquiring some editing skills. Quality audio isn't negotiable. 5. Structure Matters After recording our first seven episodes, we realized they lacked a coherent structure. This led to a tough decision: we had already re-recorded the first 3 episodes with bad audio and now we had to scrap these 7 episodes to start afresh. It was a hard pill to swallow but necessary for the podcast's integrity. The parallels between launching a podcast and stepping into the role of a Fractional CTO are striking. Both require embracing niche expertise, consistency in delivery, networking to build relationships, ensuring quality in every output, and recognizing the importance of structure for sustainable growth. These lessons have not only guided me through the podcast launch but also shaped my approach as a consultant, emphasizing the value of focused efforts and strategic planning. In conclusion, starting "Best Motorcycle Roads" has been a journey of discovery, resilience, and adaptation. These lessons extend beyond podcasting, offering valuable insights into business and personal growth. If you have questions or comments about either podcast or the Fractional CTO work - please add them to the comments and we can discuss.
