The Family Business The family business is probably one of the oldest structures in business. Brands like Walmart and Ford remain household names because of their multi-generational impact on American life. The average person may not have been fortunate enough to be born into a family whose goods and services are mass-produced in big box stores or virtual platforms. Yet every human is born with a unique imprint beyond your fingerprint. And for some of us, it was transferred by way of our families, biological, adoptive, chosen, or otherwise. Whether or not a corporation or LLC bears your sir name, you have an opportunity to leave a legacy. My family’s legacy is at the intersection of ministry, service, and music. If I am honest, the most impactful work I have engaged in to date, has always been in one of these areas, with a slight variation that bears my unique imprint. So, I’m committing to redirecting my focus to maximize those three areas of my life while strategically disengaging from activities that do not check the boxes. Because I endeavor to expand the legacy left for me and successfully hand it off to the next anchor. I am gratefully involved with Gateway Music Outreach, an organization that checks several boxes. As our 2024 cycle concludes, I’ll share a few of my favorite program highlights. Hopefully, they will encourage you to consider your legacy, too. #GatewayMusicOutreach #musicisthedoor #legacy James Mckay Jr.

In 2024, white supremacy is still a debilitating problem within corporate American culture, executive leadership, and in human resources, like it was in the Antebellum South. In the cultures you see companies talk about inclusivity, but allow nepotism to include mostly white people, while excluding people of color. In executive leadership they talk about diversity, but group photos exclude people of color. In human resources they talk about majority white population pools, and that it’s difficult and complicated to diversify application pipelines. Yet somehow, your uber drivers, amazon prime drivers, and your door dashers for the majority of your deliveries have been black or brown? But wait.. don’t open the door until they leave, they might try to break in and kill you. Meanwhile, nepotism helps fill “lazy girl jobs”, where the most desired skill is being an attractive white or Latina woman, or the nephew of a friend of the son of the mother of the boss. They hire a couple diversity tokens along with their whole IT department to cash in with the federal government and the EEOC. Then they have the nerve to think we don’t know… Happy New Year! 🎈

Here's how Tim Cook ends the year. This is how he thanks Apple employees during the season of appreciation. 1️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 30𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘤...𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺" Visionary leaders know the power of looking back. In the craziness of work, we often forget our greatest achievements. We lose sight of how far we've come together. 🎄Start by reminding others that we're part of something bigger. 2️⃣ 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐦 "𝘞𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴’ 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 [𝘪𝘯] 𝘢 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘤𝘺." Behind every great company mission is an act of goodness. The best way to remind employees of why they chose to work here is By highlighting the ethical & positive decisions we've made as a company, Give our employees a warm feeling of pride in their workplace 🤗 By making them the heroes in their own story. 3️⃣ 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲 "𝘔𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 & 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨... 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩" Every company has stressful experiences that only those who work there truly know what it feels like. 💂♂️ By fondly remembering those high pressures moments we endured And reframing them into great moments of collective struggle. We not only bolster our identity & deepen our loyalty for each other. We also wear that hardship as a badge of pride. ... A solid end of year thanks not only recounts our great adventure of this past year 🤜 But it also celebrates that we did it together. 𝑴𝒚 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 & 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔 & 𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒂𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅. 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖'𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅.

A lifetime ago, my very first job was at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill + Bar who took a chance on an unexperienced but ambitious teenager. I stayed with the franchise for the better part of a decade and learned all front and back of the house positions while trying to decide my path in life. Although I never figured out “what I want to be when I grow up,” I had the opportunity to work in several different industries (many at the same time!) before landing in technology and solutions. Even to this day, I still utilize some of the basic principles I learned at Applebee’s in both my home and work lives. * Clean as you go principal - To promote efficiency and organization, clean up after yourself while completing a task rather than waiting until the end. Today this means closing browser windows/tabs, or applications, keeping my workspace (and email inbox) clutter-free, and taking that one extra moment to put something away. * Consolidate steps - Combine multiple steps or actions to simplify or streamline a process. Reducing the number of actions required to complete a task or achieve a goal results in increased efficiency and productivity. * Set yourself up for success (aka – stock to rock!) - The more prepared you are, the better. Plan, organize, and prioritize to optimize performance and productivity. Set clear goals, create a schedule, break down tasks into manageable steps, and eliminate distractions or obstacles that may hinder progress. * If you’ve got time to lean, you’ve got time to clean! - During your free time, take a moment to assess your surroundings. Can you assist a colleague, refine a process, enhance your skills, or prepare for an upcoming meeting or task? * Consistency is key! - Manage expectations for the client by creating a predictable, repeatable, and positive outcome. * Be kind to your teammates - Follow the golden rule - treat others the way you would like to be treated. Positive behavior and attitude often lead to more positivity and kindness in return. 😊 As I’m approaching the XX year (sorry, not going to date myself 😉) mark on my hire anniversary with Applebee’s I thought it appropriate to send a wee shoutout to express my gratitude and give credit where credit is due. So – thank you, Applebee’s!!!
