Did you know? Less than half of US high schools offer debate, and only 27% of majority low-income schools do. It's Civic Learning Week, so the The Brookings Institution examined what civics-focused extracurricular activities are available across the US. The picture isn't pretty, but we are proud to be part of the solution in Minnesota, bringing debate to more than 1,300 students. Picture a landscape where children are not bound by zip codes or economic circumstances, but instead, have access to schools that nurture their talents and aspirations. When parents have the freedom to explore a spectrum of educational options—from traditional public schools to charter schools, private institutions, and homeschooling—they become active participants in their child's educational journey, fostering a sense of ownership and investment in their academic success. Critics may argue that expanding school choice undermines the stability and viability of traditional public schools. However, Governor Doug Ducey's vision transcends the false dichotomy of choice versus public education. Rather than viewing choice as a threat, it should be regarded as a catalyst for positive transformation within our educational systems. What are your thoughts on power of choice when it comes to determining where your student may go to school? Check out our new episode airing tomorrow featuring Governor Doug Ducey to learn more! #BetterLearning #BeTheChange #RadicallyStudentCentered Doug Ducey, Kevin Stoller, A4LE-Association for Learning Environments, Second Class Foundation, Kay-Twelve, Education Leaders' Organization, Phoenix,Arizona

I made this post last October & these are still my sentiments today!! EDUCATION FOR OUR CHILDREN IS STILL A PROBLEM IN THIS COUNTRY!! What’s happening in our public schools in Wisconsin is a #CRIME & I’m ready to hold EVERYONE involved accountable!!! ✊🏽 It’s NOT about public, charter, or choice … The facts are our children aren’t safe in our public schools & our children continue to #FAIL!! It’s NOT just a principal or teacher problem it’s a #SYSTEMIC problem!! Stop distracting us with this PUBLIC, CHARTER, CHOICE argument!! Our children are also failing because our #BLACK adults have allowed it!! We let anyone educate our children, indoctrinate them without input!! BLACK PEOPLE HAVE FAILED BLACK CHILDREN AS WELL!! You want our children back in public schools then provide safe environments, better lunches, renovate/ remodel or build new school buildings, make the class environments conducive for learning to take place, SMALLER class sizes, BETTER PAY FOR TEACHERS, make parental involvement mandatory, hold yourselves accountable … Invest in our inner city schools .. Our students shouldn’t have to attend “white” schools or conform to receive a GREAT public education.. .. If our public schools provided quality education there would be no need for alternative education .. .. I CHOOSE our CHILDREN/ Students!! For the record I’ve taught for public, charter, & choice schools .. I’ve also coached teachers who were also employed at public, charter, & choice schools .. I’m talking what I’ve experienced NOT heard .. The most travesty in education I’ve seen with my own eyes over the last 23 years came from our public schools! We MUST do better!! Wherever they are safe & are receiving a nonconforming, non biased, and effective education that’s where the money needs to go & that’s where our kids need to be!! .. I’ll save my opinion about hiring more district leaders & educators who live in the community for another time.. WE NEED MORE EDUCATORS IN OUR SCHOOLS WHO ARE INVESTED IN OUR COMMUNITY NOT JUST THOSE WHO ARE “helping po folks & their kids” .. I digress for now!! 🤣✌🏽✊🏽💚🙏🏽 #2023growup #drjohnson #educator @milwaukeemps @mteaunion @naacp @leonwrussell @derricknaacp @govevers @mayorofmilwaukee

ICYMI: Patrick Henry High School is undergoing a name change. I have two thoughts about this: 1. Major props to the students who stepped up and fought for this change. Advocating and speaking up is not an easy thing to do, especially at a young age. Y’all should be proud of yourselves. 2. While this is a positive, it’s also a distraction put forth by our failing schools. The self-proclaimed “educators” would rather have their students focused on something emotional (like the name of the school), than the main issue at hand; the students receiving a ‘pipeline to prison’ education. I urge these students to step up in the same strong way and demand a better education. If more and more students make their voices heard, the schools will be forced to listen. #patrickhenryhighschool #mplsschools #minneapolisschools KARE 11 https://lnkd.in/gdDFteAX
