"Young people can barely get through an interview – let alone become valuable employees" This sort of rhetoric absolutely infuriates me!! There are bad workers in ALL generations - trust me, I've worked with dozens throughout my career. What people are seem to forget is what they were like (and what the world was like) at 18, 19, and 20 years old... I think it unlikely that we were all allstar employees back then! Generation Z has faced some of the greatest academic and career-based setbacks of any generation in recent memory. The world has become more connected (in many ways to the detriment to people's mental health), more polarised, and much more diverse in the past two decades. Not to mention, I have multiple Gen-Z colleagues on my team who would run rings around businesspeople that I know from older generations! Instead of complaining about Gen Z being bad workers, here's what I'd like to see employers doing more of: 1) Investing their time and money in youth (before and during their time at your company) (If you want to talk #scholarships, then let's do it!) 2) Revisit your interviewing process and get better at weeding out candidates who don't fit your business 3) Create engaging training programmes that focus on outcomes - rather than prescriptive behaviours that you think are the best way to do something (allow for some bloody innovation) 4) Take another look at how you incentivise your teams by creating a mission that matters to your employees 5) Stop shouting with generalised, inflammatory rhetoric because you had a bad experience If you want to figure out how to get the most of your Gen Z workforce, and build a pipeline of the best talent around, feel free to get in touch.
