Social Class in Real Estate Employment ❕ Despite efforts to increase diversity, socio-economic barriers continue to shape access to opportunities in real estate. The impact of unpaid internships remains one of the starkest challenges... ◼ Research shows that 100,000 internships take place each year in the UK, with 58% of these being unpaid (The Social Mobility Foundation). This excludes young people from lower-income backgrounds who cannot afford to work without pay, limiting their access to key entry-level roles in industries like real estate. ◼ Further, a recent study highlights the "class pay gap," where workers from working-class origins earn 17% less than their middle-class counterparts in similar roles (CIPD, 2024). The pay gap extends beyond salary, also affecting access to promotions, professional networks, and mentorship opportunities that are critical for career progression in sectors like real estate, which relies heavily on connections and industry exposure. ◼ Research shows that only 1 in 8 children from low-income families in the UK receive career guidance related to high-value industries like real estate, compared to 1 in 3 from wealthier backgrounds (Social Mobility Commission). This guidance gap limits awareness and understanding of career pathways available within real estate, especially in areas such as property development, management, and surveying. ◼ There is also evidence that geography plays a role. According to the Institute for Public Policy Research, many high-value real estate internships and jobs are concentrated in London and the South East, where 75% of real estate firms are headquartered (IPPR, 2023). The high cost of living in these areas creates further barriers for candidates from less affluent regions, who may lack the financial resources to relocate. Could expanding paid internships, developing mentorship programs, and targeting recruitment beyond elite institutions help bridge the socio-economic gap?

#TeachToReach Contributor Miss Janet Baustina is a health worker for an NGO in a health facility in Kibra Subcounty, #Kenya. Here, she reflects on how being recognised as someone who should train interns in spite of her lack of formal educational qualifications was a powerful form of recognition and motivation for her. “One day when I was about to go out for field work, my boss stopped me and asked me to accompany two girls who had just joined our organization as interns. I was surprised because I was only a community health volunteer. So, I didn’t expect to be the one to help the students during their internship! So, I walked to the CEO’s office to confirm it. To my surprise, he said I was the best person to do orientation of what happens within the organization and that the two girls will work with me throughout the three months of their service. I discovered that I was the best service provider and every one supported that I should be the one to help the students. This really changed not only the way I worked but also the way I used to look at myself and think that I wasn’t good enough because I dropped out of school and went back to finish my high school 10 years later. I got motivated that even the most learned people in our organization look at my quality service not my education level or qualifications. I have managed to take up opportunities as they present themselves. This has improved a lot in my work place and strengthened team spirit. I’m a living example that is used to motivate others not to fear doing anything because of education but experience, hard work and dedication. The two girls got a lot of experience and they came back to seek employment after graduating. We are now colleagues in community development.” Join colleagues from all over the world to meet, network, and learn at Teach to Reach. Share your experience and earn recognition as a Teach to Reach Contributor. Together, we learn from each other to catalyze change at local level. Founder of Nesslar Associates, 25 years of experience in team building, talent search, hiring, and retaining extraordinary employees. Managed recruitment for growing companies.
My son is home from college for a few weeks before he goes off to work at debate camps over the summer. Debate camps are what they sound like - camps for teenagers who love debate. Rather than swimsuits and sports equipment, they bring laptops and books on philosophy and international politics. My son attended these in high school and is now a camp counselor. The pay is good. Before he goes off to be a camp counselor he’s working as a valet. A few days a week, he leaves in the late afternoon and gets home after midnight. He parks a few cars at the beginning and then stands around (there are no chairs and they are not allowed to sit in their cars) until the end of the event. Each valet retrieves 4 or 5 cars and of course, all tips are earned at the end of the night. A typical night’s tips are $15 or $20. My youngest son, a junior in high school is working as a swim teacher. He was offered the position when a teacher noticed his kindness to a classmate who was struggling to learn how to tread water. He likes the job but is learning that standing in a cold pool while teaching young people the basics of swimming is not nearly as easy as it looks. Both of my children are learning essential so-called ‘soft skills’. The basics of showing up on time and ready to work, of course, but also how to be patient when someone is afraid of the water or tired, cranky, and doesn’t want to wait in line for their car. Working with the general public can be a master class in customer service. I’m thankful my children have these opportunities. Given how important these people skills are in the workplace, I wish more companies offered summer positions to teenagers. Did you have a summer job as a teenager? What was it? What was the best or worst part of the job? What did you learn? I would love to read about your experiences. If you see a teenager serving your ice cream, or parking your car or gathering your children at the end of the day at summer camp, give them a kind word, and maybe an extra dollar or two. They'll appreciate it more than you might realize. Here's to summer and summer jobs.
