One of the fundamental philosophies within our city government is that of a high performance organization culture. There's a desire at all levels to advance our practices from that of being reactive to proactive and optimize. My name is Franz Lowenherz. I'm the Mobility Planning and Solutions Manager here at the City of Bellevue. My name is Daniel Why? And I'm the smart mobility manager at the city and I operate the IT system here. Our City Council in 2015 adopted Vision Zero goal of achieving 0 fatalities and serious injuries on our streets by 20-30. We've changed really our mindset on how we manage traffic these days. We are all about using computing power, smart computes, algorithmic decision making here to really optimize the system as a whole. We're putting applied information in T-Mobile on the RFB, so the pedestrian warning systems in the city at our radar speed feedback signs, we're also deploying them at our school zone beacons. These are some opportunities where we feel like the devices are spread out throughout the city. They're everywhere and at most of these sites there are vulnerable road users, children and people that you know need to get to school safely. Our work with Microsoft and Amazon and T-Mobile are representative of this desire to leverage these technology solutions in a test bed that is well suited for investigative research. Data is important for us because we don't know what we're trying to solve without the data. We don't know where the greatest problems are without the data. When we implement strategic initiatives or engineering solutions in the city, we can then see the before and after is the data helps us look at how does this month compared to the same month last year. You know, oftentimes we get the question, hey, there's the greatest amount of users on the road, why are we spending the effort with pet and bikes? Well, the reality of it here in Bellevue is that pedestrians and cyclists suffer the greatest consequences when there are unsafe interactions between other modes. And this current collaboration with T-Mobile with Applied Information and other CVX solution providers is really built upon that track record of accomplishment. We have a vision for how this technology or how these applications can be ubiquitous, not just in Bellevue, but across the nation as well. When I look to the future, I'm optimistic about the role that technology can play in enhancing quality of life. And I think there is really like no one silver bullet that is going to fix Traffic Safety. It all has to be looked at in totality with the entire transportation program. I'm hopeful that some of the technology solutions that we're evaluating in the city of Bellevue going to have broader applicability so we can all be better citizens in the communities in which we reside.

Stats show that U.S. roads are a dangerous place for pedestrians, with pedestrian traffic fatalities close to a 50-year high. #V2X has been in the air for some time connecting vehicles to roads, each other and beyond. But now the US gov't has entered the fray which makes the idea take on more immediacy than heretofore. Cars have been talking to phones with BLE for some time. I guess we can expect to see some higher bandwidth comms for V2X. Another bit of technology to stir the pot. https://lnkd.in/dB4iZpQe
