LASER ENGRAVING INSTEAD OF MILLING???? A few months ago we purchase the MD-X2000A from Jeremy Byers and KEYENCE CORPORATION and we are very happy with the results and value add it brings to the table. We recently ran these sleeves requiring case hardening and black oxide, as well as part number engraving in somewhat of a tricky spot. Prior to this at completion, the engraving could be somewhat tough to read which is not acceptable for us, because we fully understand the intent is to make the replacement process more efficient if ever need be. Rough surface finish causing inspection challenges? The inherent surface roughness associated with additive manufacturing is more than just an aesthetic concern, it can also compromise quality and integrity. Does this mean rough parts are more likely to prove defective? Of course not! But this rough surface finish presents real challenges for some NDT and inspection methods. Fatigue and fracture toughness are performance parameters that can take a hit due to those very surface irregularities we often encounter in AM parts, and while technology advances, smoothing out these surfaces often requires post-processing steps.
