A useful video as an introduction to #Micro_gas_turbine (#MGT): #Gas_turbines are prime movers based on the Brayton thermodynamic cycle where the working fluid is compressed, thermal energy is then added, before expansion in a turbine to produce power to drive the compressor and produce useful shaft power. The term #micro_gas_turbine (#MGT) refers to units producing shaft power below about 500 kW. Like large gas turbines, MGTs can achieve high power density and efficiency, and have the advantage of better fuel and operational flexibility compared to other prime movers of similar power rating. They require less maintenance and the noise level brought about by combustion is lower and easier to attenuate than in competing technologies. Despite previous research and development, MGTs still have a relatively low market share. Full technical potential has not been achieved due to insufficient investment in research and development, and the absence of suitable coordination and innovation sharing mechanisms among stakeholders. Recently, there has been an increased interest in MGTs for applications such as domestic and industrial combined heat and power, automotive range extenders, concentrated solar power and propulsion of unmanned air vehicles among other applications which prompted increased research and development activities. The webinar will provide an overview of the technology, then focus on aspects that led to the increased interest and explore future potential of MGTs. I’m all for stress testing these blades in the real world. However, a more engineering-based approach uses our high definition fiber optic strain sensors (https://lnkd.in/g_Wke-jm). Our ODISI sensor provides the finest resolution and thousands of sensing points both in and on the composite blade. We use this sub-mm distributed sensing tool to perform fatigue testing and predict failure.
