In 2002, Spring, I was an applicant to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Law School. It was a very emotional time for me, as I would have been a part of the first class. Being an alum, and working directly in the main administrative building, Lee Hall, I was confident that I could at least get some competent information on the progress of the application. I didn't. I remember calling after I had received an offer package from University at Buffalo Law School, which they actually extended the acceptance deadline for.... I called FAMU Law and spoke to a woman on the phone, informing her of my now extended deadline and need to make a decision quickly. Her response: "You'll know when you know (in an aggravated voice), y'all calling too much." So, my choice was made and I forgot this interaction. But she didn't. When I returned to FAMU Law in student affairs this woman worked to make my life horrible. She would openly lie about my availability, attempt to diminish my success, start rumors, and make multiple peoples lives miserable. She even nearly sabotaged the school's reporting to the ABA accreditation committee towards this end. My favorite activity of hers was her scheduling of meetings when she knew I would leave during the day to pick up my son (between 1400 - 1600) before I returned to cover evening classes. She is still at the University. I am not, despite that being my life's goal. When we look at #hbcu #turnover in #leadership we need to discuss the people whom we "reward" in this manner. Those who have offered nothing of consequence for decades and more but still exist in key positions at our universities. Those who can sabotage the efforts of people who strive to make progress. All we have done is shuffle them between departments and, many times, upwards, to hope they will go away and hide. They never do. For those who are looking into this issue, start looking at those who have endured at the university and what value they have added in any. Also, consider, when speaking about these leaders, this video from an interview with Dave Chappelle: https://lnkd.in/g2GuD44y

My presentation start at 12:45 pm Thursday, February 1st in Emilie Slohm. It is geared to 3Ls who are seeking employment in Texas for Fall 2024. - What practice is hot? What is cold? What is icy? This topic is HUGE this year and it's very different from last time I spoke! It will affect your 3L job search. So tune in! -How to find jobs that aren't posted? -How to identify smaller firms outside the AmLaw 200? -How to interview prep? However, I encourage 1Ls and 2Ls to stop by before or after. I'll come early and stay late to answer your questions too if you can hang around!
