I recently learned that in neuroscience, excitatory and inhibitory neurons work together for the optimal functioning of the nervous system. This fine-tuning ability is implicated in various areas such as sensations, motor functions, moods, behavior, and cognition. It keeps everything in a state of balance, ensuring we don't receive too many or too few impulses to work with.
This little bit of knowledge has been at the core of how I view a lot of things recently. I now understand that certain mood and cognitive disorders could be a consequence of a disruption in the excitatory-inhibitory dynamics in the brain.
Even the brain understands moderation without being told to—how much more our conscious selves? When we realize that too much of anything, as well as too little of what's truly important, isn't healthy for our minds, bodies, and spirits, we can begin to contribute better to our overall health and well-being.
