Dr. King fought for equality. Today, we strive for equality and equity. Equity is when each person is treated in ways that give them an even footing. In pretrial justice, imposing the same financial release condition on each arrested person could be seen as treating them equally. But we know not everyone has equal access to money. Ordering conditions of release based on each person’s situation and abilities is a more equitable practice. See our Elevating Racial Justice page to see how we support equity in pretrial justice ➡ https://lnkd.in/gaQ5krvd #pretrial #PretrialJustice #RacialEquity #RacialJustice #MartinLutherKingJr

In a media landscape often skewed by biases, the disparity in coverage between missing persons of different races and genders is starkly evident, perpetuating inequalities in visibility and justice. Fairness demands that all missing and murdered individuals, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status receive equal attention and support in their pursuit of justice and closure. It is crucial for media and society to prioritize humanity over stereotypes, amplifying the voices and stories of all those who have gone missing or fallen victim to violence. Which is more important Justice or Mercy? Justice and mercy are both essential elements in a fair and balanced society. However, in our quest for progress and social harmony, we must prioritize #justice as a politically powerful statement. While #mercy is admirable, justice ensures #accountability, equality, and the protection of rights for ALL citizens. Upholding the #principles of justice empowers us to address systemic #inequalities, fight against discrimination, and create a society that truly reflects our #democratic ideals and not the deep political corruption. Only through the unwavering pursuit of justice can we lay the foundation for a just and equitable #society that benefits everyone, regardless of their background or status. Question is, who is truly worthy to yield the sword of Justice?

The removal of the blindfold from Lady Justice symbolizes a shift in how we view justice today. Traditionally, the blindfold represented impartiality—justice without bias or prejudice. However, in modern contexts, removing the blindfold could signify that justice is no longer about being oblivious to context, but rather acknowledging the complexities of real-world situations. It suggests a system that sees and understands the nuances of society, being conscious of economic, social, and cultural factors, yet striving to remain fair. As legal professionals, we must ask ourselves: is this a positive evolution towards a more inclusive, aware judiciary? Or does it risk undermining the objectivity that justice is built upon? #Justice #LegalInsights #LawAndSociety #Equality #RuleOfLaw

A big thank you to Lionel Idan, Sharon Grant & Clive Newsome from the CPS for the insightful conversation on Disproportionality in relation to the lived experiences of young people and the Criminal Justice space. As an advocate for communities, I am well-versed in the context surrounding those most impacted by this issue, viewing it through the Class and Race lens. From disparities in Health, Housing, Education, Employment, and Immigration from birth, these individuals face challenges long before encountering law enforcement or the judicial system. Acknowledging how these factors influence outcomes is crucial. Effective leadership involves fostering professional curiosity about others' lives, understanding how policies affect them, and avoiding group-think to challenge affinity biases. Communities recognize their lack of opportunities and the reluctance to share power, driving them to seek change in their own ways. When we say we want to change the narrative for young people, support them in actualization, what are we willing to sacrifice for that to become a reality? #SeeYouAtWork

The recent overturning of Oliver Campbell's murder conviction after 33 years has caused me to reflect on the prevailing racial and neurodivergent prejudices in the world and the privilege I have if I was to ever face the UK judicial system. Mr. Campbell, an innocent man with learning disabilities, was wrongly convicted of murder, exposing a critical issue in our justice system. He was pressured and bullied into confessing to a crime he did not commit. This highlights deep-rooted issues in society, such as its ability to look past people's differences and judge them on their truths. 33 years ago, it may have been the easier route to pin a crime on a black, neurodivergent individual, but is it the same situation today? Well, 84% of the BAME Britons believe that racism exists in the country but is less severe than 30 years ago. It is high time that the judicial system does better and looks beyond its biases to ensure equal justice. As a professional in the field of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, I recommend critical systemic changes for the judiciary to perform better: 1. Regular audits for biases in the criminal justice system 2. Support systems for vulnerable suspects and witnesses 3. Neurodiversity training for law enforcement and legal professionals 4. Fair Interrogation Practices What changes do you think are vital to ensure a fair justice system for all? #Neurodiversity #RacialEquality #DiversityAndInclusion

What is Justice? JUSTICE IS WHERE TRUTH AND VIRTUE MEET. EQUALITY stands firm, with no bias or prejudice swaying the balanced scales. FAIRNESS flows like transparent waters, guiding seekers toward justice. RIGHTS such as freedom of speech, assembly, and privacy are fiercely protected. ACCOUNTABILITY ensures that actions have consequences, with wrongs being reckoned. RESTITUTION transforms victims' tears into healing streams, offering compensation and hope. Social justice challenges inequities and builds bridges, creating a fair world. Join us in support of the #AccessToJustice #A2J justice campaign led by Legum Limited. Access to Justice is paramount in our society today, do not be left out. Tell your justice story here: https://lnkd.in/e8PAeHZ3
