Following on from a post my friend Anna Hegarty posted a few weeks ago about an event she was running at a local Secondary School where she had requested people to provide questions to pose to those who had chosen to not to go to University and instead enter the world of work. I thought I would post the questions I suggested here for those of you who didn't choose the University route to answer, retrospectively, to help those young people considering a similar move: 1. What advice would you give someone considering not going to University? 2. If you could do it again, is there anything you’d do differently? 3. What advice would you go back and give your 17/18 year old self? 4. What skills do you think employers find most valuable for those starting their first job? 5. Are there any common misconceptions about working without a degree that you’d like to clarify? 6. How has entering the workplace straight from school impacted your career in the long term? 7. In what way did starting work earlier give you an advantage? Of course, entering the world of work is one option but Apprenticeships are another route that allow an individual to continue learning but, on the job, so to speak. And, with the Apprenticeship Careers Fair coming up next week at the Kia Oval on Tuesday 5th November, it seemed timely to share. To get the most out of these fairs, I would suggest preparing the following: 1. Do some research beforehand to find out who is exhibiting and identify which employers you wish to meet 2. Set a goal or two for you to aim to achieve with every employer you meet 3. Prepare a list of questions to ask them to help you understand their recruitment process and how best to prepare for each stage and the timelines 3. Prepare a short elevator pitch and practice delivering it 4. Have ready copies of your stand out CV so you can leave with them Good luck!

Apprenticeship Application Tip #2 Tailor your application to each apprenticeship opportunity. Rather than using a generic approach, customise your CV, cover letter, and responses to fit the specific role and company you’re applying to. Highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the apprenticeship and show how you can add value to their team. Why? Because personalised applications make you stand out. They demonstrate that you’ve taken the time to understand what the employer is looking for and that you're genuinely interested in working for them. It’s not about having the perfect background. It’s about showing your potential, passion, and willingness to learn. Avoid putting unnecessary things in your CV that wouldn’t help you in your apprenticeship application. This relates to my previous tip in my last post that, if you have a strong fundamental idea of what role you desire from early, this will allow you enough time to gain experience relevant to that specific role. Once again, save yourself the headache!

🎓 Pivoting to HR? 🎓 Last week we hosted a mock interview workshop for aspiring apprentices at London South Bank University. After so long being the interviewee, it was refreshing to be on the other side of the table. I could definitely get used to playing Alan Sugar. 😂 The evening kicked off with an inspiring talk from Nicola Adams who shared invaluable advice on navigating apprenticeship pathways. 🌟 The students then engaged in realistic, mock interviews conducted by our ambassadors. I tailored a mix of common and industry-specific questions to their fields of interest, providing them with a valuable opportunity to experience real-world interview scenarios and questions. 💼 Students received personalized feedback to refine their interview skills, followed by constructive criticism and actionable tips to help them improve. 📝 The average person has no more than 10 interviews in their life, which makes them so daunting. You don't get enough practice and exposure to feel comfortable when it comes time to interview. So, getting an opportunity to practice and refine your approach in a friendly, non-pressured environment is invaluable! I was thoroughly impressed by the performance of all the participants. 👏 A huge thank you to the LSBU Apprenticeships team, the Outer Circle team led by Romario Ellis, and to Manjinder Chhokran , Nicola Adams and Annabelle Trotter for making this event possible! 🙏 #degreeapprenticeships #aspiringapprentices #mockinterviews
