Confession Time 🗣
A few years ago, whilst working in the kitchen of a prestigious school during a particularly hectic lunch rush, I was tasked with just two jobs - delivering gravy and chocolate sauce to various dining halls during the respective courses. 🍽
You’re probably already ahead of me on this one… 🤦♂️
There were about six different houses being catered for within this building, each with at least 100 students needing to be fed. Each house had its usual pace at eating and where one may still be working through their main course, another was starting on their dessert.
In a moment of haste, I accidentally mixed up the two trolleys. 🤯
Cue noises of disgust, frustration, annoyance and, for the students at least, hilarity.
At the young age I was at the time (17) I wasn’t sure what to do, but to just deal with the mistake I had made.
The kitchen staff, though clearly annoyed with me, quickly rectified the mistake and ensured that everyone received their correct meal.
While this mistake has stuck in my mind (+21 years), it also provided a valuable lesson. Mistakes are inevitable in any position or role we have.
While some lessons are learned and avoided, others may be repeated, often unintentionally. It’s crucial to remember that mistakes do not define someone's character.
But…
Are we providing safe spaces for people to not only admit mistakes, but make them in the first place?
