The EU should establish a single biomethane market by removing trade barriers within and across EU countries, enhancing the sector's ability to meet energy demand in a cost-effective way. In our last "Unlocking Nature’s Powerful Secret" video, EBA Senior Policy Analyst Anthony Lorin presents the final point of our 8-point plan for a resilient and climate-neutral EU. To this end, we advocate for: ✅ Right to access existing gas grids in all EU Member States. ✅ Harmonisation of how the renewable value of biogas production is documented and marketed. ✅ Simplified biomethane procurement across the EU using reliable tools such as guarantees of origin and proofs of sustainability. ✅ Removing barriers to Biomethane Purchase Agreements and promoting them as a key decarbonisation pathway for industries. Why BioGas is so crucial for our energy transition?

Together with key players across the renewable carbon value chain, the European Biogas Association is raising a crucial issue: the urgent need to accelerate the reduction of fossil carbon use in our economy. 📣 We call on the European Commission to take a leading role in proposing a clear definition of renewable carbon in the EU policy framework, built on robust standardisation efforts. Policymakers should use science-based terminology to promote the capture and utilisation of renewable carbon in the economy, as it is essential in driving its utilisation, pivotal in our journey towards climate neutrality by 2050. 🍃 A clear definition will not only align with the EU's climate and energy objectives but also provide a solid framework for ensuring the effective utilisation of renewable carbon in reducing emissions. The Statement, presented to the #G7 Climate, Energy, and Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Turin, Italy, and noted in their 2024 Communiqué, focuses on the role of sustainable biofuels in decarbonizing all transport sectors while promoting environmental sustainability, innovation, and creating value for communities. The Turin Joint Statement highlights the actions G7 countries can take to increase the pace and scale of sustainable biofuel deployment, consistent with a net-zero pathway by mid-century. Brazil has the potential to become a global hub for climate solutions, attracting up to $3 trillion in investments. Decarbonising the global economy will require investments estimated between $100 trillion and $150 trillion over the next three decades. Key actions include: ending deforestation, promoting sustainable agriculture, as well as electrification, green energy (e.g. biofuels, hydrogen), and carbon offsetting. Our Sustainability Director Fiacre O'Donnell is attending a Stakeholder Engagement Workshop in Belfast today. This has been organised by the Department for the Economy NI (DFE) to discuss issues raised in the Call for Evidence on ‘Developing Biomethane Production in Northern Ireland. Picture is Edward Kerr from the DFE, speaking as the workshop gets underway. Decarbonising glass furnaces, which reach temperatures of 1,600 degrees, is no easy feat. Fossil fuels have been used for thousands of years to make glass. However, we see biomethane as a credible alternative to fossil fuels in the production of container glass in Northern Ireland and welcome the growing momentum across the business community for the project. It can be generated at a large scale from the strong agricultural sector we have here and using biomethane in Northern Ireland's modern gas grid needs to be a key part of plans for decarbonising energy. #biomethane #alternative #energy #fuels
