Coordinating a full day of summer camp for 12 weeks supported families, youth and staff of a local community. Our staff grew together as a team, leading small groups and supporting day-to-day program operations. Three key skills for success I noticed within our team, and within the families we served, were communication, kindness and creativity.
When I worked in sales, the quote, "Success is determined more by attitude than aptitude," reminded me to always try my best. Given that there is a learning curve in everything, I had to give myself the grace to grow. Adaptability and patience are good life skills. This is true, regardless if you are working with the same or a new group of people, projects or environments. For anyone in a season of newness/difficulty/excitement, give yourself the time to embrace the change/challenges/joys. Celebrate an end, welcome the new and consider the reality that there are often both pros and cons to any situation. There will be challenges and opportunities. There will be good things and not so good things. There will be good and bad, but the good can carry a greater weight when you focus on the good. You can weep and mourn, while also rejoicing and giving thanks in the same week. You are a human. Life has a time for everything. The grass might be greener on the other side today, but you might need to be in this desert right now for your good... The desert might be difficult and it might stretch you, but it is worth going through trials. Trials build character. Character building takes time.
As spring begins to bloom again, summertime preparation is on my mind. What rhythms do you want to live in? What values do you want to model to those around you? How can you do that now? Spring Cleaning and Earth Day are coming up next!
