In my nearly 25 years as an elected official, most of the other elected officials I have met ran for office to make a difference - to help his or her government be better. And the same goes for most of those who are appointed to their positions and those that rise up in their government organization into a leadership role. At the top of the list: doing more. But, in many government offices, there have only been marginal gains to be had in terms of productivity. The requests that we make of our staff to work faster or leaner conjure up in my mind Star Trek’s Scotty exclaiming, “Captain, I’m working as fast as I can!” Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a game changer that will enable governments to do more - better, faster, easier, and more economically. Right now, governments are in a phase of AI exploration and understanding. But the in the future of public service, AI will be an integral tool in our work, embedded in our processes and practices.
