The DLR Institute of Air Transport took part in #ODAS2024: the 24th joint ONERA-DLR #Aerospace Symposium in Braunschweig, Germany, organised by the DLR Programme Directorate of Aeronautics. ODAS 2024 celebrated 25 years of ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. cooperation on rotorcraft research. The theme was "Very Short Range Passenger Air Transport," including rotorcraft and #AdvancedAirMobility, covering passenger air transport up to 500 km, both civil and military. ODAS is an annual event, hosted alternately by DLR and ONERA, with DLR hosting this year and ONERA hosting next year in France. Dr Marc Gelhausen from the DLR Institute of #AirTransport presented on "Long-term impact of limited airport capacity on passenger demand and fleet development up to 2050." Key points included: - Post-pandemic air traffic recovery - Tendency towards larger aircraft due to limited #Airport capacity - Importance of smaller aircraft for decentralised travel between smaller airports - Growing market for direct flights on low-demand routes, benefiting smaller aircraft We look forward to continued innovation in joint aerospace research! #AirTransportResearch

The Vega was a groundbreaking aircraft designed by John Knudsen Northrop and Gerard Vultee while they were working for Lockheed. It was renowned for its high speed and long-range capabilities, making it a preferred choice for record-setting pilots of the era, including Amelia Earhart and Wiley Post. The Vega's advanced design and performance set new standards in aviation and contributed significantly to the development of more modern aircraft. Another milestone celebrated on October 16 is the historic flight of the Bell X-1 in 1947, piloted by Chuck Yeager. This flight marked the first time a human exceeded the speed of sound in level flight, a feat that was previously deemed impossible due to the "sound barrier." Yeager's successful mission demonstrated that supersonic flight was achievable, paving the way for future advancements in military and commercial aviation. Additionally, October 16 marks the anniversary of the founding of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1958. Established to ensure the safety and efficiency of the burgeoning air transportation system, the FAA has played a crucial role in regulating and overseeing civil aviation in the United States. Its establishment underscored the growing importance of air travel in the modern world and the need for comprehensive oversight to ensure passenger safety and the smooth operation of national airspace.
