Space is a domain where Europe is clearly vital to combine our strengths.
We need to launch ambitious programs in keeping with Europe’s goals: the Green Deal, digital sovereignty, industrial autonomy, and remain open to international collaborations.
When I introduced the idea of sending large data centers into space several years ago to create a space cloud, it triggered suspicion and doubt (and laughter), as it had never been done before…
I am extremely grateful to the people (*) and companies who accepted the risk of partnering to look into the feasibility of such an unusual idea, and also grateful to the European Commission for having trusted us.
We all became progressively convinced that it made sense for many reasons.
The idea is not to replace all terrestrial data centers, nor to open the floodgates for even more digitalization.
But digitalization must have limits in our finite world: electricity and water will have to be shared between the exponential needs of AI processing and humanity’s basic needs.
Putting data servers into orbit to relieve our terrestrial energy grids makes sense and would be a strong signal that regulation is needed.
I hope Europe will lead the way.
