Financial literacy is essential for securing our future and making informed decisions about our earnings and savings. As clinicians, we dedicate our lives to taking care of others, but we must also take care of ourselves financially. Our Pedja Stojicic, MD, MPH Stojicic said: "Recently, I was in a room with about 80 medical residents and nurses, including several international medical residents. I asked a simple question: "How many of you have a 401k?" Only 3 hands went up. Shockingly, half the room didn't even know what a 401k was, despite their hospital offering a 3% match. This experience highlighted a significant gap in financial literacy among medical professionals." To address this issue, our friend and colleague Nisha Mehta, MD Mehta is offering a course designed specifically to improve financial literacy among medical professionals. This is a fantastic opportunity for residents, nurses, and all healthcare workers to gain the knowledge they need to secure their financial futures. 📚 Course Information: https://lnkd.in/eckb_2bW Let's spread the word! Please repost and share this link so that as many graduate medical trainees as possible can benefit from this invaluable resource. Together, we can ensure a financially secure future for all healthcare professionals. #FinancialLiteracy #MedicalProfessionals #HealthcareFinance #401k #GraduateMedicalEducation #InvestInYourself #NishaMehta

Academic Foundation Year 2 Doctor, Aspiring Neurosurgeon, Clinical Scientist, Medical Futurist, and Academic Scholar
Here I go again… to dedicate a Sunday to a locum twilight shift (2pm-midnight) in the Acute Medical Unit. Despite all doctors fearing the drought that is of garnering Locum posts and ad hoc shifts, there always proffers a list of advantages and disadvantages of locuming: 1) the money is better! - however, be warned that tax does eat away into this… 2) you can continue to develop your clinical competencies while on a research / academic block (if currently pursing an academic post or foundation programme) 3) you will be up against the full-time Locum doctors who are on a dedicated FY3 or non-training post. It reminds me sometimes of “The Hunger Games” if you get the reference to acquire some shifts… 4) despite usual work in unsocial hours - balance these advantages and disadvantages!

Frustration mounts over repeated E.R. closures across B.C. interior Many a time during my career, I had to address problems with shoe-string budgets. This meant looking outside the box for cost effective solutions that didn't rely on multi-million dollar budgets. I had a boss tell me, "Learn to drive the Jalopy before you get the Cadillac". As a result of having to find cost effective, creative solutions, it becomes ingrained in your mind. Every year we graduate a few hundred new doctors between UBC and UHNBC here in British Columbia. When we look at these small hospitals, like Merrrit, Chetwynd, Mackenzie, and Haida Gwaii, these hospitals are designed to handle the basic ER activities. More major cases are usually transferred to a larger center with a specialist. So here's the thought. Why aren't we allowing our final year medical interns to cover ER's in smaller centers? The interns would still have access to supervising doctors in larger centers which they could converse to via, skype, phone, text, cell etc if they require additional help. You could also send 2-3 interns to these ER's. In exchange, the interns gain valuable experience and they could also receive renumeration or additional credits for their hours served. The province would pay for the transport the interns to the ER's. This could be personal vehicle, charter flight for more remote locations of medivac backhauls. The ER's stay open, interns get more experience, it's a win win for everyone! https://lnkd.in/gWzUXAsn
